Alan's Story

Life Since I graduated from high school in Ashland on May 16, 1990, I attended Mizzou where I earned a BA in History in 95 and later a Master Ed in Education in 99. I would see Shannon Garrett and Jill Burkett in the Education building (Townsend Hall) on occasion there. I actually got a chance to work with/for Norm Stewart and Kim Anderson (basketball camps and statistics) before they moved on from Columbia while I was in grad school. I usually make it back for a few Mizzou Football games per year now. This year, I plan on making it to the Illinois game, Nebraska, and of course Kansas at Arrowhead. Last year, I was appalled at the shafting that went on in Ames, Iowa. I have traveled quite a bit here and there, lived in Colorado for a while, can´t wait to go back to Europe. I still try to take a couple trips in the summer since I usually have the summers off as a teacher. I also come home to visit the parents and make sure the grass is in order and what not. I have taught high school special education for 8 years, going on 9 now. I taught at both Hickman and Jefferson City High Schools before we left for Chicago in the summer of 02. Teaching is so much different in Chicago than Central Missouri for sure. I would say that the biggest two differences that I have seen in the 5 years that I have been here are the complication that the union brings into work politics here and I also see the poverty in stark contrast to the million dollar home kids. I have been a department chair/assistant administrator, and have also assistant coached some sports; girls basketball, baseball, and cross country. I miss Cardinals Baseball on the radio in the summers quite a bit. I didn’t realize what ...Expand for more
a big Cards fan I was until I moved to Chicago. The papers don’t cover the Cards and the local news only shows Cards bloopers, so classy. (I’d like to get satellite radio sometime but they’re not hand-sized yet.) I have some fond memories of high school. Some of the most vivid, I think are track meets and practices; basketball practices, basketball camps, and games; Betsy Glascock’s great Jungle Juice parties our senior year. (I know that she hosted a couple at least. Thanks!) And who could forget Bucky Smith and Joe Short’s little league baseball teams, the A-Team and the Dirty Dozen? We always hated batting against Russell Quinn and Aaron Lane. Meeting for pictures before Junior Prom at South County Realty parking lot by Casey's. Getting detentions assigned to me along with everyone else in Mrs. Matroni’s freshman English class. Ooo, I almost forgot the senior trip. Remember? That’s when the drinking age was still 18 there. I didn’t think anything could hit New Orleans like we did until Katrina. I wish I could have gone back to visit before that hurricane since nothing could still be completely the same there now. I still have a picture of me around somewhere with an orange slice smile from one of the Hurricanes from Pat O’Briens. I also had a great time at our 10th reunion (3 grades (89-90)). I really enjoyed the golf scramble at Eagle Knoll, the meeting at Boone Tavern and then riding the back river roads in Hoeppner’s duelly down to the Hartsburg Hitchin’ Post. I wonder who will organize our 20th reunion and where it might be. Maybe the reason why some of us have fond memories of high school is that life can be so . . . real, sometimes. Sincerely, Alan
