Alan's Story

...I began playing trumpet at Jeff Davis Elementary, was lead trumpet & section leader at Stockard Jr High, then at Kimball. Was part of the Univ Texas Longhorn Band during their "hey-days" of glory in the 60's. I later became a trumpet player & bugler on military active duty with the 52nd Army Band and now, continue to play my trumpet in church orchestras on Sunday and special services. ...My dad was an accountant, the Controller at Southwestern Medical School, and it must have rubbed off on me. I went on to earn a BBA in Accounting from Texas State Univ, worked for the IRS in Austin as a tax examiner, became an accountant & auditor with the US Army Finance Corp. Retired from combination of active & reserve military duty as a Lt.Colonel. Now work part-time during tax season. ...Was active in scouts, even earned my Bugler Merit Badge. Have spent my adult life very, very active in the Royal Rangers scouting program, serving on National Staff, Camp Director, staff memb...Expand for more
er, and more. I travel quite often to Central & South America to assist in scouting leader training camps, which are held totally in Spanish. (Thanks to teacher Jenkins & the El Sol Spanish Club!!) ...Was publisher & editor of the Red Oak newspaper (& for about a year, editor of the Italy News-Herald.) Now, I write free-lance as a part of the Texas Auto Writers Association -- a lot of fun, a lot of driving new vehicles, a lot of traveling, and voting for Truck of Texas at the Truck Rodeo event. I am a member of SEMA and attend every year. ... My wife Judy & I have moved from the DFW area (Midlothian, Red Oak, Ovilla, Garland, Oak Cliff) in 2010 and attempting to slow-down & retire in East Texas. We live in a log cabin on 50 acres with 5 small ponds and lots of deer, fox, etc. It's great... closest neighbor is a mile away. We have 4 children, 9 grand-children, & 2 g-grandchildren. They all come visit with us much more often now that we have "a place in the woods."
