Alan's Story

Following graduation, and at the age of 17, I enlisted in the Air Force, serving both in air traffic control and military- and national-level intelligence, After completing my 10-year enlistment in the Air Force, I received my commission as a Cryptologic Officer in the Navy, This led to numerous tours worldwide as a Navigator, Combat Information Center (CIC) Officer, Cryptologist, Intelligence Officer, Forward Air Controller, and Special Technical Operations (STO) Officer. I received intensive advanced training by the three major intelligence agencies in all aspects of intelligence collection including human intelligence (HUMINT), Psychological Operations (PSYOP) and behavioral analysis (BA), Planning to retire in Pensacola Florida, I finished my Master's degree in Criminal Justice and completed courses in criminal investigation, facial reconstruction, criminal profiling, and DNA sequencing and analysis, as well as a second BS in Computer Science. I received an offer to join the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) as a criminal profiler and criminal investigator. Because of injuries acquired on some of the later tours, I opted to retire to an acreage in Iowa near Omaha, on which I ...Expand for more
planted two orchards. One year to the day after I retired, I received a phone call from one of the agencies for which I worked in the Navy asking me to come back to expand and redesign a program in which I worked in the Navy. I was reminded military officers, especially military intelligence officers are not permitted to retire. We serve at the pleasure of the President and are subject to recall by the intelligence agencies for the remainder of my lives. So, I found myself employed as an Antiterrorism Advisor, Force Protection Officer, and Behavioral Analyst stationed at Offutt AFB and working for the three intelligence agencies. In 2007, I was permitted to retire again, after which I completed my PhD in Human Services/Psychology and opened my practice as behavioral analyst and counselor to military and law enforcement personnel and veterans. Because of intense PTSD and physical issues acquired in the military, I closed my practice in April 2015, to photograph wolves in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Canada, grizzly bears in Montana and Wyoming, wild horses in South Dakota, and actors/reenactors in Wisconsin, Texas, and Arizona and play guitar and violin with friends in the midwest and southwest.
