Alan's Story
Hi y'all Updated 12/16/18
While it may come as a bit of a surprise to those that may remember me as pretty much an All American Boy, I'm actually British. I was born in England and my family is originally from Wales. For some reason the British Govt. based on Brit Think, says that makes me British and not English, regardless of my being born in England. Go figure. During my grade school years I attended PS 159, Marie Curie JHS 158 and then Bayside High. It was a great time to be young and Bayside was a good place to grow-up.
A while after BHS I joined the Army, which seemed like the right thing to do at the time(????). I was Stationed in Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington for about a year and a half. I shared a house in Tacoma with a couple of great guys and it was really party central. I even met some old friends from Bayside/Long Island while there.
The Seattle/Tacoma area was a great place to live, even with the rain. While there I got to see most of the Pacific Northwest, Covered most of Western Canada, Washington and Oregon down close to the California border. Spent a lot of time visiting with friends in Vancouver, British Columbia. as often as I could. Vancouver and the BC coast are really worth a trip.
I was eventually transferred to Vicenza Italy. I was part of the Adjutant General Group and I ran the Command Data Processing Operation, which was also my civilian job. Vicenza is in Nothern Italy and is located about thirty miles west of Venice and East of Verona. I spent a little over a year in Italy with a couple of months on temporary duty in Southern Germany (Oberammergau, Berchesgarten and Munich). Yes, I did get to Octoberfest as well and it only took me about three days to recover. I bought a brand new car, a VW Beetle would you believe? Can you really see me in a VW Bug? To be honest, I really loved that little thing. I had all sorts of fun with it and traveled very extensively in it. Always kept my camping gear in it and just went everywhere. I even shipped it back to the U.S. when I came home to NYC.

y commitment, I was having such a great time in Europe that I took my separation there (yes you could do that then). I traveled around Europe for some time and ended up living in England for a while. I met all sorts of really great and fun people, and while visiting London, I met the lovely young English (London) lady who would eventually become my wife. I still stay in touch with friends and family there and usually manage to get back to Europe every now and then..
I eventually came back to the States(NYC) and did the GI Bill thing. I've worked in the Technology Business for my entire career and thoroughly enjoyed it. I've moved around a fair amount and lived in NY, CT (2X), NJ and NC for varying periods of time. I finished my professional career as CEO of an eCommerce/ EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) Technology Company. I was with the EDI company for the last sixteen years of my career and lived/worked in the Raleigh, NC ( Cary actually) area. Most of the first roughly two thirds of my career was as Chief Information Officer running Corporate Computer Software/Hardware Operations. I still travel for pleasure now, but fortunately don't have to get on a plane what seemed like every week for a helluva lot of years anymore.
Some of you may remember that I was sort of into cars and Hot Rods back in the day. Well that transitioned to thoroughly enjoying restoring vintage British Sports Cars as well as owning a number of them. My father worked for the Austin Motor Company and we frequently had Healeys and MGs at the house, so I guess it was in my Genes. I also have some fun occasionally riding my Motorcycle (a Harley of course).
We built a house on Johns Island, SC close to Charleston, It's just a few minutes to the beach at Kiawah Island. We designed it from the start to be a casual and fun beach place to live. Finally retired and live here full time.
Still friends with quite a few of the Bayside and BHS school friends from those days. It's a lot easier to stay in touch with email, FB and such.
