Alan's Story

Life OK, I give. I've been terribly remiss in creating a profile. After dutifully screening out the "classmates" pop-ups as spam for many years I discovered that it was a handy way to re-connect with old friends and particularly to connect to the committee working on the 30th reunion. And - of course I'll be there! Not long after graduation I started work in a sales position in Renton. Spent 2 years there and learned a great deal about life. In the process, I also decided that I had a great attraction to the young lady who ran our switchboard. Of course, that was back when you really called them a switchboard. I started hanging out with Connie and her friends (now you might call it "stalking") and after a few months of this she decided we might as well make it more official. Actually dating a fellow employee violated company policy - can you imagine - so we were both let go. Turned out to be a very good move on everyone's part. The "policy" was based on an assumption that relationships in the workplace weer disruptive and never worked out. Well, Connie and I were married in '81 and celebrated our 25th anniversary last summer. Worked out well after all! It also was prophetic that she was running the phone system. Not long after we left, I started working for a company named Northern Telecom engineering and selling telecom systems. That was just at the dawning of the explosion in telecommunications technology and applications that we might call the Information Age. I've been in that ever since, with 23 years now at what was Pacific Northwest Bell but has since morphed into USWest and then Qwest. My team and I handle a group of named national accounts. Enough of that... About the same time as the 10 year reunion, Connie and I reconnected with some old friends and started getting together regularly. Remember Don Dilley and Mike Smith? Well, one day Don calls to tell me that he's signed me up to audition for a role in a musical. Next thing I...Expand for more
know, I'm singing the male lead in a Puget Sound Musical Theatre production of "Carousel". That led to several more years of performing, but also led me to the PSMT Board of Directors. That in turn led to grant writing, which got me involved in local politics. In '93 I was appointed to the King County Arts Commission, where I served for 11 years. In 1996, a group of us also formed the Federal Way Chorale, directed by our old TJ choir director, Don Barrows. I've sung with them ever since and have seen lot's of TJ grads move through over the years. Don retired from it in '06, but the Chorale is now directed by Laird Thornton, who is the current director at TJ. We rehearse in the TJ choir room, so things seem oddly familiar. Connie and I have 2 girls - Katie and Jenny. Since we are still in the area, the girls went to Star Lake, Totem and now TJ. Katie will graduate this year and Jenny will follow in '09 (God willing!). We were heavily involved in PTA and other things so stayed connected and also ran into other old schoolmates. Both the gilrs are taking German at TJ, so have our old German teacher Margaret Matsuda (now Gotchy). Katie's talking to Montana State and WSU so we'll see what happens next. We built a house on the hill above the Smith Brothers Dairy and right on the back side of Lake Fenwick, Like I said, we stayed close. We've been here 15 years and counting. We've stayed involved in the arts, supporting the Seattle Symphony, the 5th Avenue Theater and (of course) the Federal Way Chorale. We also have tickets to the Sonics, Seahawks and Mariners. Always doing something! Connie loves to entertain, and we have a nice wine cellar. I also started home-brewing a few years ago and have gotten pretty good. We bought a nice SeaRay a few years ago to pull the wakeboards and inner tubes around and I bought a motorcycle in '04 to start my 2nd childhood. I'm looking forward to seeing you all again this summer! Hi to you all, and God Bless!
