Alan's Story
Life
I've had a lot of different experiences in life; many of them were early on and I use my experiences to talk with youth today.
My motto is simple - Loyalty, Integrity, Courage. It's actually the motto of our Alaska State Troopers, but I believe it to be true in life. We must live life in this same manner. We should be Loyal to our family, friends, our work, and those whom we serve. We must always have Integrity in all that we say and do, "..to thine own self be true." Life is not all "black and white", but we must know where the lines of black and are drawn and ensure that our actions and comments are between them and do not go beyond them. Courage... it takes courage to do what we do, say what needs to be said, and in some instances, not say a thing. It does not come without pain or suffering, sometimes, but with courage, we are better, our families are better, and our community, state, and world is better.
Age, like pain, is mental. I'm in my 30's and feel like I'm in my 20's. I have learned to enjoy every day for what it is and has to offer and to give of myself. Society nearly demands that we only think of ourselves, "What's in it for me?" But I say that life is so much mo...Expand for more
re when you give a little and work towards what's in it for others. As JFK said, "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." We look at next week, next year; why not look at today and five years from now. What are our goals? What will it take for us to get there? What is our back up? Too many people focus on one goal as their only option. Having a dream is great, all of us should have atleast one; but we need to be ready and open to whatever else may come our way. "...thank God for unanswered prayers."
"Don't worry, be happy." ;)
College
I love talking about law. Give me a crime, in detail, and I'll tell you every possible charge you can forward on the defendant. I can't wait to make detective!
Military
My active duty time was pretty much by the numbers: Basic at Ft. Dix, AIT at Eustis, and stationed in Alaska. After I submitted paperwork for DI school, I changed my mind and got out, went straight into the Guard, and have seen all of Alaska and parts of several other states, Honduras, and Guatemala.
I got out a couple of years ago, but I'm looking at going back and at least finshing my 20 if not continuing to 25 or 30 year mark. We'll see!
