Alan's Story

After high school I worked for the Motion Picture Operator's Union in Chicago. I gave my life to Jesus in 1978 and at that time quit the Motion Picture Industry. I started playing Southern Gospel Music in the early 80's and have been playing ever since. I worked various jobs including finance, retail management and then finally in 1987 I started working in the Baking industry for Hostess/Wonder Bread in Hodgkins, Il. Started out as a helper for bun season and stayed there until they closed in 2012, at which time I was Sanitation Supervisor. I also worked short stints with the plant in Denver and Mrs. Bairds in Dallas Texas. I had asked the Lord to keep me at Hostess until I could retire or He called me home and had wondered how that was going to happen when they went out of business. As I was questioning these things I received a phone call from my Plant Manager from Hodgkins who just took the job as Plant Manager for the new Hostess and he asked if I would be part of the team to get the Schiller Park Bakery back up and running and bring back the "Twinkie".I told him yes and it was an exciting and fun adventure, though I did h...Expand for more
ave to have 2 stints due to 100% blockage in my widow maker the second week I was at the bakery. They decided to close the plant in November 2014. I took some time off to visit the kids in San Diego for Christmas, but when i came back to Chicago, on New Years Eve I woke up in tremendous pain and my wife had them rush me to the hospital, where I found out I needed double bypass. Thank God surgery went well and started looking for another job. Checked out opportunities in South Carolina, Florida, etc. wanting to get out of the cold winters. In June, my corporate head of FoodSafety/Quality called and asked if I and my supervisor would come as consultants to the Indianapolis plant, which we did. I finished consulting in October and they called me on my drive home and asked if I wanted a permanent position, which I took. God has a sense of humor, because I said that I would never go to Indy and here I am. It's a great place to live. I live here with my wife and my mom (who is 90) We have 12 children and 24 grandchildren. Lord willing, I would still like to move to a warmer climate and spend more time playing Southern Gospel Music.
