Albert's Story

I graduated from New Rochelle High School ~ Class of 1960. After graduation I was at a major turning point in my life. I was registered for the 'draft' and waiting for notice from the Selective Service Administration. I did not want to join the Army; I went to the Recruitment Center and enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. Under went training at Great Lakes, Illinois - both Boot Camp & Hospital Corps School. Upon graduation was assigned to the U.S. Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia (1961 - 1966); released with an Honorable Discharge. Returned to New Rochelle and took a position at NRHMC in the 'accounting department'. Since graduating from Shadyside in 1974 my life has been BUSY. Worked (and retired) from Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, New York. Worked (and retired) from Ferncliff Skilled Nursing Home in Rhinebeck, New York. Returned to school ~ received a BA from the College of New Rochelle (1977); received a MA from St. Joseph College-Seminary (1989). Still SINGLE ~ too busy working, studying, and traveling (Italy, England, France, Israel, Canada and the United States. I always wanted to be a 'caring' person when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea idea. As it turns out, they were correct.. When things get 'out of hand', I enjoy spending time with my friends and family; I enjoy reading, listening to QUIET music or spending time out of doors. I have lived in different places ~ born and raised in New Rochelle, New York; during my Navy years I lived in Great Lakes, Illinois (Boot Camp & Hospital Corps School); than stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Portsmout...Expand for more
h, Virginia. Joined the Franciscan Brothers of the Poor and lived in Fayetteville, Ohio. Nursing school took me to live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; after graduation in 1974 ... returned to New Rochelle, New York. In the 1990s, moved to Highland, New York on the Hudson River (my sister, brother in law and myself bought a 2 family house. 2004 ~ retired and moved to Del Ray Beach, Florida. Live there for 2 years (could not take 'hurricane seasons' ... returned North to New Rochelle, New York. For the past 4 years I have been working at North General Hospital on Madison Avenue in Harlem. Recently 'laid off' due to the hospital financial problems and its final closing. At present I guess that you can say - I'm Retired 2011 Update This has been an EVENTFUL year. In July 2011 had severe pain on my right side ... went to Sound Shore Medical Center Emergency - passing a 'kidney stone'. While there the doctor decided to get a CT Scan of the abdomen to check it out. Needless to say they found something else ... large mass on the left side. After another CT Scan and biopsy - the doctors determined it was malignant and sent me to Westchester Medical Center for further workup. Oh well! They scheduled me for 'surgery' ... Left kidney had to be removed .(Renal CA) ... recovery was going well ... that is, until late August when I had some 'chest pain' ... ended back at Sound Shore Medical Center and admitted for observation ... lucky me! Had 'positive' enzymes and the cardiologist transfered me to NY Cornell for an angiography and workup. Ended up having stents placed in 2 of my coronary arteries. GOD ... it's rough getting old!
