Albert's Story

Telling my story is not going to be easy on my emotions. After, or I should first say that I did enlist in the US Navy in April of '69, one month before Grad. The VP wanted to kick me out two week before grad, but I did manage to behave. I went to San Diego for boot camp. Than I was shipped to Japan where I hooked up with my first ship, the USS G. K. Mackenzie DD 836. We did many things over there (on the other side of the world). We service as escort for our Flat Tops. We did radar picket for our ships off the coast of North Vietnam. Meaning we were up front and in all the actions. The N. V. planes were afraid to come within 150 miles from us. No, we were not bad. The Navy planes had our back. There were times when we would be on the 'gun line' for up to 4 months. There was one time when we were off the coast of North Korea. We were there for 30 days and believe me it did not snow for three of days we were there. Which means the it snowed a lot. I would love to say I had a great time, as I would tell my mother, so she wouldn't have to worry about me. But the truth be told, I don't think any of us liked being there. We weren't there to fight for your freedom. We weren't there to fight for our flag, We were there to support our troops on the ground. We were there for them. They are my heros. My second ship was the USS Oklahoma CLG 5. It was there that I met my brother Joel. He made life over there more like fun. Thank you Joel. I know your going to read this. I got kick up of the Navy for drug abuses. And when I got back, well the people here were not friendly. They spited on my uniform with 6 ribbons and they call me a baby killer. I guess I was one of the lucky one. I've heard waster stories from others who where there. It was in September of '71 when I made it home. I was no longer a part of. I was on the outside looking in. I drank alone whenever my homies would leave me alone. It was as if I was still over there. I got married in '73, hoping that would get my mind out of Vietnam, but after two months I put a 30-30 Winchester to my head. Only to have my wife open the door. She has never been the same. We're still friends, we had two boy, Alberto Jr. and Joseph. We were together for 7 1/2 years before I got a wild hair up my a-- and left. My second marriage ('85) was hell. I had a better time in Vietnam, I did. And after driving her out of her mind for 10 years, I gave her, her freedom. After that my life started on a downward drive. I had 25 jobs in 26 year ('72-'98). Three jobs I only worked for three days. Walked into a recovery home in Vista, California on January 13, 1999. With nothing to live for. Just me and my truck. I know God was looking out for me every day of my life. I just had to stop running away from HIM. I have been sober and drug free since. "BUT FOR THE GRACE OF GOD". One day at a time. ree jobs since running out of the compound (the recovery home). A Vietnam Veteran, who owns a print shop hired me because I too was a Vietnam Vet. I started working for him on May, '99. I no longer work for him full time, but I'm still there part time. I started working at San Bernardino Valley College as a night custodial on November 22, 2004. God is still watching over me. I hope to someday go back home for a school reunion. And hopefully meet some of you. There is so much more to my story, but I hope that maybe you will understand that life hasn't been easy for me. I'm just glad that God send HIS SON to save me and you. May God bless all of you and give you grace and peace. Update: I'm now working days at Valley College (still a custodian) I love it. And the staff at KVCR-24 are glad to have me back. My first assiment was North Hall 1st flr, which house KVCR, and the old Art Building. My supervisor is a want-to-be-a-OG. But when we face up he goes crying to the Vice Pres.. On January 2011 I started my new position on the union (California School Employee Association) Chapter 291 as 2nd Vice President. Now management sees me in a difference light. Just useing my leadership skills I learn in the Navy. The members are always glad to see me. I service them, they are the reason I became active in the union. I start my day at 7:00AM to 3:30, so now I'm able to attend church on Wednesdays. Love it. I have been to two Multi Class Renions, 2010 and 2011. I am glad that many of you are doing good. And I hope to see you guys again. Till next time take care and God bless. P.S. My youngest son will be going to Afhgan on Monday, Oct.2011. He is a Marine, I'm so proud of him. He looks just like me. Update-9-12-13: Still sober and free from drugs, still hanging on to my Lord Jesus. Life is funny, I was separated from my beautiful wife in July of 1995. I filed for divorce in October of 1995. And I July 30, 2013 my divorce was finalize. Why did it took so long? Guess I was hopping that we would get back together. I know I loved her so much. I did anything for her. And now that she want us to get back together I just don't know. I will be praying on it. At 60 years old she is still very beautiful and thin. Just like on the day I met her. I will be seeing this weekend, and I hope it goes well. But I will have to take it slow. Well I hope all you guys are doing well and I'm hoping we can meet again, the sooner the better. May God bless you and give you all of HIS Grace and Peace. Update 12-2-2013; God is good, Had a great weekend, went to the movies with a very beautiful 20 year old friend. One thing I have not said is that for the past 4 years I have been the DJ for the LFS&AA. I have upgraded my toys and have over 1450 songs. Oldies, Tex-Mex, and I'm adding Christian songs as well. Life is go good. Thank you Jesus Christ for all your bless.
