Albert Kenney:

CLASS OF 1967
Leesburg, VA
Philippi, WV

Albert's Story

After graduation it was enlist or be drafted. The county was so far behind in its quota that it had been granted an exception to the law and could draft at 18years and three months. My acceptance letter from VPI was meaningless. I enlisted in the army with an enlistment contract specifying the schools and training I received. Then spent 22 months in training, shipped out to Viet- Nam; got another 6weeks of in country training in culture, history, and language. Surprising how quickly I picked up the language then though I don't remember much of it now. Then out into the field with a small 4 man advisory team to work with local military units such as village militias or regional forces. I survived 18 months of that and returned home back to civilian life. It has been 38 years since I returned and I'm still working on putting it behind me. Anyway I resumed my education and ultimately found my way into a 4 year Physician Assistant Program. I graduated with honors and ended up back in the army; they made the best starting offer. Then I began traveling all over the world on various brief assignments. Seems that some of the people I worked with in Asia were still around and remembered me. This continued until my luck ran out and I was seriously injured and needed some surgical reconstruction. That 16 months of recovery was the longest consecutive time at home I had at that time. naged to have three kids. The third child was born a few months after I left active duty; I had had enough. I wanted to be a Daddy to my kids; not a stranger who was around for 3 or 4 weeks and then disappear 2 or 3 months or longer. Thats in the past. Now I'm in a civilian neurology practice as well as being a co-owner/partner. Unfortunately my old injuries are catching up with me. I've has 3 spinal surgeries but the deterioration and scar tissue continue to worsen. However, I'm still on my feet though my walking range is limited and I have chronic pain. So we are trying to recruit another provider and get him or her up to speed on our style of medicine so I can step back to part time. Hope the rest of the class of '67 (highschool) and '78 (AB) is doing well. Al Kenney w addendum: At age 64 years I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. This is able to mimic many other medical problems. There is no treatment except to avoid foods containimg gluten such as cakes, pies, most baked goods and desserts. My diet is fairly restricted now. There are substitutes which tend to be more expensive. Its genetic based buy they have not figured out what turned on the switch. Just after my 65th birthday I had a stroke that affected my coordination and balance. I'm not driving anymore. But I do tend fall frequently and walk like I'm drunk without my cane or walker. I am medically retiring. 5/16/2015. Bye for now. Al Kenney
