Albert's Story

How does one condense 50 years into a few paragraphs. It was a sunny day in Michigan; which is rare. After graduating C.M.U. in 77' with degree in hand (Broadcasting & Cinematic Arts); I worked as an on air D.J. in the Detroit and Ann Arbor area. Mostly weekends and fill in; late night shifts. By day I was working for a local music company. By this time in my life I had experienced the West via an extensive back packing trip and ski trip to Colorado. By 1979, with the idea I may end up on the West coast; I packed my bags and headed West. I never made it to the West Cost. Colorado became my home and is til this day. My folks had retired and moved to Atlanta. I had no desire to live there; unless I was working for CNN. Believe me I tried. Tough business to crack. I continued to work in Broadcast Media for a few more years and in the Music industry. Eventually making the move into advertising and marketing in the media. Working in the media was quite rewarding. During this time period I also shot photography professionally (mostly concert stuff and for clients running advertising with me - also some weddings and Quinceaneras). After 35+ very successful years in that industry; I retired a few years ago. In the 45 years I have lived in Colorado...I have been married 3 times...One son and 3 step children. Wife #1 actually attended S.L.H.S. during 10th grade; though did not graduate from there. We meet while attending college at Central Michigan. They will remain nameless to protect the innocent; so don't go running to your yearbooks. Number two was from New York...Loved horses and we ended up on 36 acres with livestock, horses and other assorted critters. What an eye opening experience that was considering I grew up in Detroit and Southfield. Was doing the horse thing for 17 years. Learned to ride English along with many other ranch type chores. My step daughter from that relationship followed her mom in their love of horses. They now reside on the East Coast. My son on the other hand followed my adventure streak...Which is what brought me to Colorado in the first place. Upon moving to Colorado in 1979; my skiing was amped up several notches. I discovered Mogul Skiing and Racing. By the end of my first year in the Rockies, I had taken up white water rafting and kayaking; which lead me on a 25 year journey of exploring white water all over the U.S.A., Central America and Europe. My love of the mountains grew as I discovered high altitude mountaineering which lead me to eventually climb 32 of Colorado's some 53, 14,000 foot mountains, along with, Mount Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua (2 of the 7 summits) . Don't know if I will ever climb the rest...getting close to 70. But we are all in that same boat. About 12 years ago I changed up my skiing from Alpine style to Telemark. Look it up. Still do the Tele thing to this day. You know what they say...Tele till your smelly. I do not run much white water rafting these days and traded in that adrenalin sport for motorcycling. Which wife number 3 loves to ride on the back. Speaking of my third wife...we meet ten years ago (Match), ran off to Sturgis and eventually got married...though not in Sturgis. She is from Long Island or...Expand for more
iginally, went to college at Michigan State and taught school in Detroit. We moved to Colorado within a few months of each other. Something else I have not mentioned. Back in 1976 I became a certified scuba diver. Have been doing that ever since and now certified as a Master Diver...though there were some gaps where I did none. Busy doing the horse thing, running around in the mountains and raising kids. My third wife being an avid swimmer took to scuba diving shortly after we met and we now travel the world going to exotic scuba diving destinations...Wakatobi, Raja Ampat, Palau, Galapagos and all over the Caribbean. Heading to Fiji in July. One of these days we may go for a land base adventure...figure we will wait until we are old. We have a YouTube channel with videos of some of our adventures. Bert & Shari's Scuba and other exotic adventures...or something like that. When not diving she is busy creating art, working on their Coral Crusader website, yoga and lots of other healing type things. Since leaving the workforce in 2019 I spend more time volunteering, cycling, working out and enjoying music. I should say something about my kids. My blood son has a Masters Degree in mechanical engineer working on cutting edge Robotics stuff. Step daughter #1 is a fire protection engineer and still has that love for horses. Step daughter #2 is a writer working on a science fiction novel. My wife's son just finished a masters program in sustainable farming. Two are married...one is engaged and the other is just shacking up. My blood son is also one of my go to ski/snowboard buddies and has turned me on to repelling into slot canyons (look it up)...he is an avid technical rock climber and tries to play the banjo. When we are not running off to the next adventure, my wife devotes a lot of time as an artist (assemblage, painting, mixed media), photographer and Coral Restoration. In 2023 she did a Ted Talk on the repercussions of our continued environmental impact on our waterways and destruction of coral reefs around the world. I on the other hand; am a bum. No no, actually I volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Levitt Pavilion; which operates several non profit concert facilities around the country. When I am not out on highway seeking the next adventure...you can find me jamming away on the guitar. I have several friends in which we get together on a regular basis and play tunes from our glory days. My taste in music is quite varied...Blues/Rock, Jazz, Bluegrass, R&B and some Hip Hop. Still go to concerts...Last few, Ron Carter (Jazz Bassist), Bob Dylan, Tedeschi/Trucks, Dead & Company, Ringo Star, Elvis Costello, Billy Strings and Mavis Staples. These were shows in 2023. If any of you play and instrument and would like to jam around the time of our reunion...hit me up. Would love to hear from you. I can be found on facebook... Bert Ross in Colorado. Though if you ask to be FB friends...just a heads up. We are coming into a heated political year and sometimes I just love to go off on our political establishment. Most of my stuff is just harmless dribble. I promise that there will not be any images of what I had for dinner or pets in ugly sweaters. PEACE & LOVE
