Albert's Story
After R-B and N0rtwestern, I joined a Chicago company to be a staff film producer. That job expanded into sales promotion and organizational communication, which led to a new position as a management consultant with Towers, Perrin, Forster & Crosby in NYC. I joined the Army (actually, the Army Reserves) and trained as a Special Agent in counterintelligence. I married a Milwaukee girl, Sandra Spatz, about that time (1968). We moved back to the Chicago area shortly thereafter to join Hewitt Associates, becoming a partner in the firm at age 30 and remaining with them until retirement in 2000. Sandy and I now live in Alexandria, VA just outside Washington, DC. Our older daughter, Laura, went to UofC and is in financial services. gner for theater and married Jonathan Newman, a classical composer. They produced a sparkling granddaughter, Amelia, a decade or so ago. I now do pro bono consulting and volunteer work at the Smithsonian. I received The President's Award for Volunteer Service in economic development (May 2008). My wife and I love to travel (about 120 countries visited). One highlight was sailing through the Northwest Passage when it first opened up for tourismnot long ago. Pictured above is yours truly on a trip to Greenland, which included some time in Iceland. Life is good!
How do I hope classmates remember me? Well, at our last reunion, a woman ambled up to me, looked intently at my name tag and said, "Al Schlachtmeyer...I remember you. You used to be smart." That'll do. I probably once was.
