Albert's Story
College
This is the part where I have to give Marion most of the credit. She put up with me the entire time I attended college while we raised our family. Instead of a bigger home or new cars, we paid for tuition.
I earned my Associate of Science in 1978, my Bachelor of Science in 89 and I finally finished with an MBA in 1995 (or was it 96?).
It seems like I've been going to school or teaching classes my entire life. That's not a bad way of passing the time!
Workplace
I'm one of the lucky ones. I have a job that I love and always have. My first 20 years were spent as an Ironworker erecting building, bridges, and power plants.
Now my education and experience is paying dividends. I have a welding consulting business that keeps me very busy. My practice takes me around the United States and around the world. If its welded, be it a ship, jet, automobile, truck, earthmoving equipment, oil refineries, offshore drilling rigs, or pharmaceuticals, I am involved. No two jobs are the same.
I also serve as an adjunct Instructor for two internationally recognized professional organizations; the American Welding Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. They provide me with an opportunity to work w...Expand for more
ith engineers on issues related to design, inspectors on quality issues, and I get to work with welders that are upgrading their skills.
I serve on about 12 AWS committees and subcommittees developing welding standards that are used worldwide.
Unlike many people I work with, I have no plans to retire. Why would I, I have it made. I can't believe people pay me to have this much fun!
Family
Marion and I have been married 44 years. Where did all the time go? Repeated practice has resulted in three children and they gave us six wonderful grandchildren. Watching them is better than any TV sitcom. Now our free time is split between watching hockey, soccer, and dance recitals.
Medical Condition
Hey, I'm still here. Doesn't that count for something?
Class Reunion
Last year was our 45th class reunion. One of our classmate remarked, "Who are all the Old People?" Given the alternatives, I say we all look pretty damn good! We had a great time visiting with old friends that are spread near and far. That said, I have to say four hours simply wasn't long enough to spend time with everyone. Pam and Margi did a great job of pull it all together.
Future Plans
Enjoy what I have and see what this experiment produces.
