Mary's Story

As of today, October 17, 2010, I do not have a gold membership. I cannot respond to emails. I can accept friend requests. Thank you, Mary Leah Albertson (Wells--maiden name) Life Hello Classmates, I currently live in Oklahoma. Here is a short biography about myself. Before starting to the University of Phoenix Online, I attended Central State University in 1978 to 1980 my major was undecided at this time. As years went on, I decided to return to college. I went to the same college but at this time the name was changed to the University of Central Oklahoma. I attended my second time in 1999 to 2000. My major at this time was Special Education. The college was 40 to 50 miles from my hometown. I would drive everyday to attend college. On June 5, 2003, I was in a car accident. I did not drive for a long time. I recovered from the car accident and thought about going back to school. I started to the University of Phoenix Online in 2004 with a major in Human Services/Management. I continued throughout the online school and finally decided to change my major to Psychology. I earned my Bachelor of Psychology degree and finished my Psychology program on November 10, 2008. I earned my first degree 30 years after High School (graduated from High School in 1978). I want each individual to know that goals can be accomplished no matter how long the goal takes to accomplish. My first goal to earn my Bachelor degree has become reality. My second goal is to earn a Master of Psychology degree from the University of Phoenix Online. I am currently working towards this second goal. My third goal is to become a facilitator at the University of Phoenix Online and becoming a counselor. I participated in the graduation ceremony on July 26, 2008 with the Oklahoma City, OK ground campus. The graduation ceremony was held at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, OK. The Honorable Mayor of Oklahoma City, OK proclaimed July 26, 2008 as University of Phoenix day. I found out when a student has only nine hours credit left the student can walk in the graduation ceremony. I am a single parent raising my two children. I am disabled and a stay-at-home mother. I cannot hear on the phone very well due to a moderate loss of hearing. I have nerve deafness which will only get worse. I will lose my hearing completely. I cannot understand phone conversations. I have learned as time has gone on that I have learned to read lips. I also go to school online due to reading all my assignments. I may have trouble in a ground campus class due to my hear...Expand for more
ing loss. I purchased my first hearing aid on January 10, 2007. I am learning a new world of hearing with my first hearing aid. I will celebrated my 50th birthday on 09-09-09. I have been told by many people that I do not look a day over 30. People ask me how I stay young and I tell them I am a child at heart. I love to swing in the park and let my hair blow in the wind. My children and I still swing in the park because swinging helps bring out the inner child in all of us. Now, let me tell you about my children in the next paragraph. I have two children. I have a daughter who is 17 years old and she is starting the 11th grade on August 20, 2009. This is her third year of High School. My daughter is active in her Art Class. On April 27, 2009, my daughter received 2nd place in a drawing competition. This contest was for Logan County Conservation District (soil erosion and conserving the environment). In Junior High School, she was selected from her school to receive the ¿Student of Today¿ award while in the 7th grade. The presenter of the award said, ¿The name was changed from Student of the Year to Student of Today.¿ Around February, 2009, my daughter was selected for the National Honor Society. She earned a 3.57 grade point average. I am really proud of my daughter¿s accomplishments during her Junior High School and High School years and many more years to come. I have a son who is 25 years old. He works at the local grocery store as a grocery clerk and sacker. I am also proud of my son for having the same job since, September 4, 2003. As well as, purchasing his first home on June 22, 2006, which was the home I grew up in as a child. My son, daughter, and I live in my childhood home. My children and I will have many generations living in our new home. In my life, I have experienced loss of loved ones, divorce, and continuing my college education. My first child died when he was 4 years and 10 months old in January 30, 1986. My father committed suicide on April 5, 1987. My mother¿s friend died from a terminal illness (cancerous tumors) on July 24, 2004. My ex-husband (my son¿s father) committed suicide on January 8, 2005. All of the above are my life experiences and this is who I am. I am a caring person who wants to help people. I have had many life experiences of my own. I am working towards becoming a counselor to help other people thru their own life experiences. I have said, ¿If the past, present, and future experiences did not happen in our lives we would not be where we are today.¿
