Alejandro's Story

Hello CLASSMATES Members! Hope everyone is doing well in your own lives and wish you all nothing but the best! My name is Alex and was a student at Lamar Jr High, which by the way was the best time of my life! For those of you at Lamar from the 86-90 period, I was the skinny lil kid with long hair in the wheelchair that was always runnin people over, accidentally of course. lol Acquired the name "Wheels" for some time that passed around but mainly started by this guy named Lazaro, although I don't remeber his last name. "Why four years at Lamar?", you may ask, well unfortunately got detained in the seventh grade and although not the proudest highlight of my life, I was able to meet great new people at the time. They weren't the best of friends or anything. I belive I had two or three but they may disagree, lol. But there were quite a few good souls that made my schooling there a little more easier. If you know know me, you know who you are so my deepest thanks and wishes.:-) To answer question many people had about my disability but were to afraid to ask, I have Spina Bifida. Its a spinal cord incompletion at birth to sum it all up and pretty much kept me in chair. Although I can walk on crutches for a few yards and did so for a short time at Lamar as well but sweated like you could not believe and got to class late! lol That was in seventh grade too now that I think of it. lol Anyway, after Lamar, I moved to Mission and attended Mission High School for almost two years. My father did alot of moving around to keep his electrical contracting business up and running. Mission High was okay, met a few ppl that were very understanding and did not give me "the awkward look" (Ask any disabled person who was young and disabled in school, they'll tell you or better yet act out the awkward look.) lol But I really want...Expand for more
ed to stay and go to Memorial or McHigh because I knew known faces would be there. But once I got accustomed to the place there, things were lookin okay. But then.... My father decided to move to Austin in early '91, and realized I really didnt want to go back once I got there. I wasnt to thrilled about the high school in Austin though. I did have to quit at sophomore year due to health problems and also was left missing alot of ppl from the valley but also proved to be a big culture change. Kept askin myself "Where are all the Mexicans?" lol It was just hard to get accustomed to a new area as far as high school was concerned. But the transit system here rocked! I could go anywhere on the city bus and not pay a cent! I guess disability does have its advantages especially if I can't drive! :-) Actually I could learn with hand control car but don't want to on these Austin crazy roads! lol I did get better though, worked a few jobs in sales, telemarketing sales that is and a few phone survey jobs which was okay, but really wanted to get my writing going. Writing has always been a passion for me, thanx to Mrs. Wall, my 7th grade English teacher (89-90 year) there at Lamar. She always had us write one page of anything every class morning. I never turned it in though, for some reason. Guess I was to shy to submit something about myself. Mainly wrote about my point of view as disabled person. Every story I submitted to magazines and publications got sent back though, and eventually I discovered the business of copywriting through a friend, and that's pretty much what I do now. I don't have to work for anyone and give thanks to GOD that I don't have to everyday in the morning. Well, thanks for dropping by to visit my profile and feel free to drop me a line, even if I have no clue on who you are. God Bless :-)
