Alex's Story

From the day I graduated in 1975 I did a terrible job keeping in touch with High School friends, losing contact with virtually everyone over the years. Needless to say, email would have been a very helpful tool from day one. On the other hand, I tend to continually look forward and rarely look back. That doesn't help. For those who care or were wondering if I fell off the face of the earth this is where I've been and what I've been doing in a nutshell. If you don't remember me or didn't know me, that's OK. Odds are I don't remember you either but probably knew who you were at the time. I joined the Navy after graduating from JTHS, retiring in October, 1995. I was a Cyrptologic Technician and a Computer Programmer (FORTRAN). My duty stations were Great Lakes, Illinois; Pensacola, Florida; Edzell, Scotland; Homestead, Florida; Pensacola, Florida; Edzell, Scotland; Sonoma, California; and Chesapeake, Virginia (where I retired). Geez that was rough! As you can easily determine, I spent 20 years in the Navy but didn't go to sea once (I can still hear my Father laughing over that). I tried in vain early in my career to get stationed on submarines or ships, but they didn't have available positions for me at the time. Later, after becoming a Computer Programmer, I was stationed on land. Simply put, Programmers are needed on land -- not at sea. Although I had a say in the matter I was stationed where I was most needed. If I wanted to go to sea I had to get out of the Programming billet to do so. I wasn't about to do that, nor did I have a burning desire to leave my family six months at a time at that point in my career or after my daughter was born. At the same time, what I did do on land protected the lives of the people at sea.. Now, when someone teases me about the lack of sea time, I simply ask them if everyone in the Air Force flies, or if all Coast Guard personnel float in a boat. That usually mutes them long enough for me to get away. My Navy career was very rewarding despite the lack of sea time, and the experiences and friendships literally last a lifetime. I have friends all around the world and around the United States. It also instills a self-confidence that is indescribable. There is an old saying that is so old but rings true; you can take the man out of the military, but you can't take the military out of the man. You change, but change for the better. People who knew that shy and skinny kid in Milton would be very surprised to see how I've changed and developed over the years (especially the teachers). I hope for the better. And skinny? Let's just say those were the good old days. And that shy guy turned into the sly guy. I met my wife Somjit (Sam) while stationed in Homestead, Florida and we married a year later in 1981. We've been going strong ever since and are honestly each other's best friend. I have one daughter, Sandra, who was born in Homestead, and a step-daughter, Michelle who was born in Miami. Both of our daughters are married and we have two grandsons.. Sandra, her husband, and my grandson Ian live in Pensacola. Michelle, her husband, and our grandson Taylor live in Mississippi (two and a half hours from Pensacola). When I transferred from California to Virginia we settled ...Expand for more
in a small city called Elizabeth City in North Carolina, just South of Virginia Beach, VA. That's where we lived both before and after my Navy retirement, for a total of 10 years. I worked for the Navy Exchange system in Virginia Beach as a Systems Ananlyst/Application Administrator after my Navy retirement supporting automated Warehouse Management Systems. I transferred to Pensacola in the same capacity in September, 2001. I worked for the Navy Exchange until March, 2007 and then International Shipholding Corporation located in Mobile, Alabama as a Unix/Database Administrator until the end of last year. (If you've seen the Captian Phillips movie that was actually our captain and crew). I am now a civilian contractor for the Navy working as an Apllications Engineer. As with anyone's life the above is just a small synopsis of where I've been in my life. Naturally there was a whole lot going on in-between. In regards of my family, my sister Gail and I are the only surviving members of my immediate family. My mother, father, and three brothers all passed away at different times over the years. My father was the last to pass away in 1995. Gail lives in Kunkletown, PA. My wife and I occasionally take trips to Pennsylvania, at which time I make it a point to visit Milton and my family's gravesite on Milton Road. Sad to say, but it's the only thing left that brings me back to Milton, but I do have a lot of fond memories growing up there, particularly since it hardly changed. I miss it a lot at times, but not enough to move back nor pay New Jersey property taxes. It's also the downside of being away in the military for 20 years - sometimes everybody's gone by the time you come home. Following in my Father's footsteps I was a volunteer firefighter in California and North Carolina and was the President of my Fire Department in North Carolina. It wasn't planned that way, but life has a way of telling you you're more like your parents than you ever thought you would turn out to be. I was also heavily involved with multiple charitable organizations such as the MDA, Meals on Wheels, the North Carolina Governor's One-on-One Youth program, to name a few. After doing so for about 30 years I no longer volunteer my time but as with most people we now support volunteer organizations through financial contributions instead. With the exception of the loss of family members I must say I've had a blessed life. We have a comfortable and very happy life, all through hard work and occasional ups and downs. My wife and I enjoy traveling and seeing new things but more often than not stay at home working in the yard or around the house and especially being around our three year old grandson Ian. When it comes down to it we have a comfortable home and live in a great city. Fortunately we slow down just long enough to enjoy it and stop long enough to smell the roses - of course the roses that Sam planted and nurtured. Okay. I'll leave you with two Navy related questions. Q. Do you know what the difference is between a fairy tail and a sea story? A. A fairy tail starts with "Once upon a time...". A sea story starts with "This is a no shitter!". Q. Did you know NAVY is actually an ancronym? A. Never Again Volunteer Yourself!
