Alex's Story
My main claim to fame in high school was singing. I was part of a group few groups but finally ended up in the group called the Devotions along with, Lannie Williams, Lonnie Partee, Bobby Simmons, Benny Robinson and later Joseph who's last name I can't recall right now. I'm singing in the only photo of me in the entire YB, which appears in the 1969 year book on the Spring Jamboree page, under the guitar players. I have on what I'll call the paisley shirt. During that time we were the hot group. Some have told me we were ahead of our time. We had the opportunity to sing on the same shows as the Jackson 5 (at the Regal Theater), the Chi Lites, the 5 Stairsteps, Tyrone Davis and others. We performed at other schools (Saint Mel's, Barat College and others), and the hot clubs at that time (the Bonanza, High Chaparral, Keyman's Club, Stingray, and others that I can't recall at this time). We were also part of an ensemble called Theater In The Street, under the direction of Delano O'banion. Along with the Devotions own repertoire, we perform Mr. Obanion's interpretation from the play "Hair" and many other renditions. We also performed on WTTW channel 11. If I listed all that we did it would not fit here. I've had a very good life since but that was no doubt the time of my life. My only concern was get...Expand for more
ting the harmony and the steps right.
After high school my life spiraled out of control with all types of illicit behaviors and immorality. However, 32 years ago I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal savior. I got married and went back to school. Now, I have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting and a Master's degree in education. I retired in 2013 as a teacher for the CPS. I'm in great health and I'm still a singer/songwriter and play guitar and keyboards, mostly for church. I give God all the praise, glory and honor for the things he has done in my life. Don't hesitate to say hello. I'm remember many of the people I was close to in high school but I'm not the greatest with names so maybe send a photo too but say hello even if you can't send a photo.
By the way, if anyone knows Benny Robinson, tell him that I would like to hear from him. So would Lannie. Almost anyone I run into who knew our group asks about him. We called him the "golden throat".
Also, if anyone knows Miriam McGee (that was her last name in 1969) I would love to hear from her.
I've also been trying to find The Jackson family (Herbert, Sue, Thaddius, Frances, Agusta (a.k.a. Gus) and Jean). I think most of them moved south years ago. If you know them, let them know that I would like to hear from them. Thanks
Peace
