Alex's Story

Life I really feel I have been gifted because I've had a wonderful life: the freedom and ability to live out many of my childhood fantasies, being able to hit the trail when the wind filled my sails and experiencing new countries and cultures; just living free from the normal shackles of life. I'll start in Feb. '82 after leaving Oceana High school in Pacifica, CA. I returned to FL. and took odd jobs until the end of that year when I joined the USMC, graduated Boot Camp Plt.2049 and served as an Infantryman until '85. Next a few short-lived jobs that year working in malls, restaurants and construction until Aug. when I became a Mobile DJ with Sunset Entertainment in St.Pete. Nov.'86 I was sent to Sweetheart's Dance Club in Clearwater to replace that club's regular DJ which then opened a new path for me; DJ'ing at some of the Exotic Dance Club's in Central FL. This then led me to Orlando where I became a Radio DJ in April '87 until June '88, starting at WWFL 1340AM, then WSTF 101FM and ending at WORL AM stations in Orlando. Sep '88 I fell into one of the most enjoyable jobs I've ever held: I was applying as a waiter, but my voice got me hired as a host/announcer in Kissimmee's Medieval Times Dinner Show. During the show I wore a regal costume w/ sword, rode a white horse and performed in front of large crowds. July '89 I answered an add that read: Drive a Town Car /Make $500 a week. Answering this add TOTALLY CHANGED MY LIFE! The next day I started driving a Lincoln Town Car for Grey Line Inc. in the Disney area. Sep. '89 the tourist business slowed to a crawl so in Oct. I flew to Frisco and w/luck started my own limousine service at San Francisco Intl. chauffeuring passengers to hotels, on guided tours of the city and the West. From 1989 to the present, I have been working part-time in this business while continuing to travel & follow my dreams. The Spring of '91 found me in Jackson, Wyoming and by fate, a job working every summer thru '95 as a wrangler on ranches near Yellowstone Park. This work got me into rodeo and joining the International Professional Rodeo Assoc. and the Professional Rodeo ...Expand for more
Cowboys Assoc. competing in Saddlebroc and Steerwrestling events at small rodeos around the West in '92-'93. Jan '95 I arrived in AK. where I spent 6 months at odd jobs; my first working at a sled racing kennel with huskies entered in the upcoming Iditarod, then as a Carney during the Anchorage Fur Rondevouz in Feb. Then in April I flew to Kodiak Is. to work on a fishing boat in the Gulf of Alaska and finishing the end of the year as a dive-fisherman harvesting sea cucumbers near Ketchikan. April '97, I graduated from Young Memorial Technical College in Morgan City, LA. earning a certificate in Commercial Diving Science; my experience harvesting sea cucumbers in AK. gave me the idea for this course. From February - May 1997 I also studied Pre-Hospital Care in the evenings earning a certification as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic. May 1998, I graduated from the Farrier Science program at Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School near Sacramento, CA. After graduating from this program I returned to WY. and started working at the Triangle X Ranch. Then in my own part-time business as a horse shoer. Twenty years ago I made a goal to visit all 50 states in the US. before I would visit another country. I started this goal in July '90 in MI. and finally accomplished it in Oct. '98 in ME. With all of my efforts spent towards reaching this goal it felt like a big accomplishment for sure, but at the same time I felt a little sad as I no longer had something to aim for. But I'm proud to say that just two weeks later, in Oct. '98, I took my first flight to Europe. After returning from this trip I made a new goal: to explore all the interesting places there. Asia has never interested me before but due to a rare offering in July '02 of a $150 R/T ticket to Manila on Japan Airlines, I reluctantly took a chance and bought the ticket and flew THE NEXT DAY to the Philippines via Tokyo...and my life took a whole new path that I would've NEVER imagined; traveling around Asia. Now I'm living in Davao City, Philippines, happily married since April '06 to a beautiful Filipina and we had our first-born in May '08.
