Alexis's Story

Life Well, I suppose most people write how they went off to college after their high school graduation. They graduated, got married, had 2.3 kids, and now have a dog named Rex. I on the other hand spent my years during and after high school on sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. I had a great time for several years hanging out with local rock bands, partying all week long, and taking long and sometime dangerous road trips. It was the life I wanted and it was amazing, for a while. Then life became alittle less than before, not so much rock n' roll, not so much a big fun party, and then soon the party became more like a job. The job started to get ugly, and it was a job I didn't get paid for. I started to remember some of the other dreams I had when I was younger. I wanted to be a psychologist, I wanted to help people, and I wanted to travel. So I picked up and moved to Sacramento and left my old life behind. I started working for the department of health services and put myself through college. I now have a degree in psychology, and I have a job I love working as an analyst for the Dept of Social Services. I am also living my other dream of travelling the world. I first travelled to Italy and Germany. I spent a couple weeks in Rome, where I took a class and lived with an Italian family. Taking my first trip out of the country was great, but doing it by myself was even more interesting. It was scary, but I loved it. Rome was amazing--ancient history staring you in the face, surrounding you, and readily available to reach out and touch. One highlight to the trip was watching a free concert featuring Sting in the middle of Circa Maximus (the track on which the Romans used t...Expand for more
o race chariots). Sitting there listening to a Rock band from Spain, looking up at the ancient ruins of the Roman Forum. It was then that I realized I was living my dream. Germany (Munich in particular) was different but gorgeous, lush, and very friendly. It seemed like you could buy just about anything there. It would be made by hand, and the person that made it was the person that sold it to you. There is something wonderful in that. I also went to South East Asia, and spent about a month in Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It was an amazing trip. It was hot and sometimes a hard road to travel, but sites like Ankor Wat and the beaches of Thailand made everything worth it. Even when I was stung by a sea urchin off the coast of Cambodia. As for my dream of helping people, I am able to do that every day at work. But I've also interned for a group here in Sacramento called the Share Institute. We work with NGOs all over the world to help people (particularly women and children) in third world countries to help themselves. I am proud to say that I worked on a project in which we started a school in Afghanistan that teaches women and girls to read and write. A privilege taken away by the Taliban. I have also worked to raise money for the other great projects we do around the world. Needless to say, my life has become very full. I don't have any children or a husband, but I'm OK with that. Life is good, I am happy, and I am looking forward to discovering the next adventure and the next road on which my life will travel. If you visit this sight and have bothered to read to the end of it (:-D) please email me or leave your name. I'd love to hear from everyone.
