Alfred L (Al)'s Story
Life
After graduation in "57" from CHS I attended MSU until the spring of "58". Playing the sax in both high school and college was fun and studying music education was fun also. Went to lunch with a buddy, Tony Highland, and for some strange reason we decided to enlist in the Army. A few days later we were on our way to Ft Chaffee, Arkansas just a few weeks or so behind Elvis. The next four years were spent in the Transportation corps at Ft Eustis, Virginia. I auditioned for the Army Band on post, made it, and spent the next 16 years playing sax for "Uncle Sam" all over the world, enjoying every minute and meeting some of the greatest guys and gals in the world, some famous. After a couple of years in the Army, I came home(Memphis) on leave in Jan of "60", met a beautiful young lady that graduated from Oakhaven High School, and married her in September of 1960. In December of 1961 we had our first son. Two more children followed in 1965 and 1967. I retired from the U S Army in 1978. In the Spring of ...Expand for more
1979 I went to work as a letter carrier in the U S Postal Service where I spent the next 20 years plus, retiring in 2000. This brought me around to the age of 60 and I wasn't ready to fully retire, so a few jobs followed. First was as District Manager of circulation for The Olathe Daily News, next was as a Pharmacy Tech., and then was night stocker at Kohls. Being a Pharmacy Tech was the most interesting and rewarding, stayed with Sam at Gardner Pharmacy for over two years. I left in 2004, because I needed a total knee replacement. After the recouporation period I decided to retire at "65" It was a long road, but I have no regrets. I am now enjoying the fruits of my labor with my 3 kids and five grandchildren. I am also still playing the sax, three services at church every Sunday and dances two or three times a week so I guess that I haven't trully, fully retired as yet. My health is excellent, not over weight, and I expect to be around for quite a while. I DO recommend retirement for everyone. It's Great!
