Alfred's Story

March 3, 2019 Fifty Years since Penn Hills HS. When did I get to be so old? Figured that I would upgrade my Classmates.com account from the freebee as it is 50th year reunion time. Then I could keep track of what may be happening. For those of you who inquired or tried to reach me before on Classmates, I apologize – I have not been active on this site. For those who might be interested, below are the highlights of my journey after Penn Hills. Started at Lafayette College in Easton Pa and graduated in 74 from Hiram College OH with a BA in Biology. Worked some odd jobs and went on to Pitt Graduate School of Public Health and got my MPH – Environmental Health. In 77, I went to work for the Allegheny County Health Department Bureau of Environmental Health (ACHD) and later on as an administrator supporting IT. Somewhere along the line I also acquired an MBA from Duquesne University. My life changing moment came in 84 when I finally found a woman who could put up with me – one Chris Hoke (an artist – Cleveland Institute of Art). So, of course I married her. No kids – just the four-footed furry ones. Bought a fixer upper house in Forest Hills and went to work. Then after 27 years with the ACHD, my position was eliminated in 2004 due to budget cuts in the County. So, I went to work with Chris doing the juried art show circuit as...Expand for more
Rising Moon Studio selling hand-made rustic furniture and artistic creations for the home and garden. In 2005, we sold the Forest Hills home and moved full time to Tyler County WV to a 136-acre farm we had purchased back in 99 as a get-a-way place for Chris to do her artwork. When the economy crashed, we finally gave up that business and started Rising Moon Farm – as specialty cut flower growers selling to the floral trade. It has taken us about 10 years to realize we picked the wrong stage of life to become farmers. In the interim, we built a passive solar, partially earth sheltered home on the farm. Though we moved into it about 5 years ago, we still have many projects to finish it off. We are now phasing out of the specialty cut flower business and looking to rent out the old farmhouse as a work/vacation retreat place for city slickers like we used to be. (Soon to be listed on Airbnb as “The Farmhouse at Rising Moon Farm.”) We plan to keep growing flowers and vegetables, but mainly for ourselves and our guests. So that in a nutshell is 50 years… I keep wondering what happened? I blame it all on my mentor at the ACHD who years ago told me that if I wanted to find direction in my life - GET MARRIED. So, I took his advice. Little did I know what kind of “Direction” he was talking about… Can't help but wonder what's next?
