Alice's Story

Life How does one synthesize 40 years of living since high school? After leaving Camelback I entered Good Sam School of Nsg. It was short lived! I married in 1967 and had my son late in 1969. As I look back that was probably the finest achievement I have! I graduated from ASU in 1972 (nursing), divorced and worked for a while in North Phoenix (critical care and training firemen paramedics). I moved to Boston in 1976 about the time of our 10th reunion! I went to Boston College (MS-Nursing) and stayed teaching at the University of New Hampshire for a couple of years. I moved back to Phoenix in 1979 and worked a while, started a doctoral program and hung out trying to find myself. I began a career with the VA in 1981 and have been with them ever since. I have moved 9 times for the agency and for the past 15 years have directed the graduate medical education program for two medical school affiliations with the VA. I married again in 1989 after 17 years of being single but have since divorced.I have had many academic appointments and have taught medical students, graduate and undergraduate nursing students and medical residents. I currently live in Chico, California and work in Sacramento at the UC Davis Medical School and the Dept of VA health care system in Northern California. I have developed an interest in telemedicine and have spearheaded the project for our health care system. I currently run two clinics myself and provide services to veterans in rural communities (did I mention I am a PhD Nurse Practitioner). My son is married (and is also in Chico) and I have two grand children (ages 1 and 3). Life is good and I spend time cycling, traveling with my job, gardening, seeing the coast of California whenever I can, visiting my parents in Scottsdale and performing with my music group all over the world. I was granted Irish ...Expand for more
citizenship in 1995 (my grandmother was born there) and I travel there about every 18 months. I have developed close relationships with my family in Dublin. The greatest joys in my life are the children and my music and travels. I have great satisfaction in serving our nations veterans. While my politics are middle of the road I hold strong opinions about the war (which I am happy to share if asked). I have tolerance for diversity and have learned patience and acceptance among other life lessons. I have enjoyed good health and work our several times weekly to stay in shape. I read when I can and enjoy discussing literature and movies with my friends. I regret I lost touch with my closest high school friends (Lynn Brandys where are you?) and would like to make amends to some I could never track down (David Pugh I hated dancing with you but I liked you!!). I have learned to be a good friend, to listen and to offer advice when asked and to keep my mouth shut otherwise! I have suffered the death of friends, lovers and children and am a stronger person for it. I have sat with the dying, holding hands and knowing that being there was the best thing I could do in life-helping another to die with grace and dignity. My relationships with my sisters (Phyllis and Polly) have developed into a lifelong friendship, as has my relationship with Rob-my brother. I have developed a strong sense of self and am comfortable in my own skin (it's all going South of course!). I am a spiritual person although not particularly religious. I am open minded and tolerant of diverse views. I am a lifelong learner and believe that if I am not learning I am dying! I hope to hear from some of my classmates and find out how you have navigated life these past four decades. Alice (AKA Ali) PS I am now back in Tucson- retired Jan 1 following my father's death.
