Alice's Story
Life
Following high school, I attended CSUB and graduated with a B.A. in English. I had hopes of attending law school, but that didn't quite work out for me that year, so I planned to substitute teach and perhaps try law school the following year.
Before the summer was over, I was in a terrible car accident which left me in a halo brace trying to mend my broken neck. 4 months later I had surgery and have never had a problem since. This experience left me looking to do something different with my life, but I wasn't sure what.
I substitute taught for about 4 months before I started a job with Dedicated Dental Systems (DDS) in their Quality Assurance department. I worked there for three years. During that time, I was also teaching at San Joaquin Valley College (SJVC) part-time. I ultimately left DDS to work for SJVC full-time.
In 1997, I married Michael Abril and we moved into a house in Westchester. I remember going through this neighborhood often during the years we were in high school, but I never imagined I would live there.
Well, I really enjoyed working at SJVC. I taught English and ethics. It seemed like I finally knew what I wanted to do. Then...

it. To add to the fun, in July 2000, we had a son, Blair David.
I still go back and teach at SJVC from time to time, but it has only been to substitute or teach one class, so it has not been too demanding. Other than that, I just try to keep everything together.
2008:
We moved from Westchester almost three years ago and now live in Stockdale Estates. Paige & Blair are now attending Stockdale Elementary School and are in the 4th & 2nd grades.
I no longer work outside our home. Other than selling Mary Kay to a few friends and family, I continue to be a stay at home mom and volunteer.
A couple years ago, I was getting ready to go back to substitute teaching or doing something that would allow me to be home with the kids after school, and then Mike & I decided to have one more child. Taber Marie was born September 2007 and just turned one. She is really a joy and has made me take things a little more slowly than I did before.
My days are very hectic and I often don't know how I'm going to get everything finished, but I enjoy spending time with my children, even when they are driving me crazy. I'm happiest when I'm helping in their classrooms or organizing something for our church.
Now, I'm just looking forward to getting together with some old friends at the next reunion. I hope to see you there.
