Alice's Story
After I left JD, I went to U of H & also got into a training program at Methodist in Respiratory Care where I became certified and worked for 4 yrs+. I then joined the Navy to see the world !! After that fun filled experience I went back to school & got a BS in Microbiology/Chemistry working in the medical field. Since I remained in the Naval Reserves, I was activated for Operation Desert Shield/Storm. After that I went back to school and got a MS in Healthcare Administration. I was then selected for a Management Training program with the Veterans Administration. After completion I worked in various capacities at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. Among my accomplishments there were the development of 6 Community clinics, a Mobile Health Clinic, Outreach to Homeless Veterans, & annual Community Stand Downs. In 2003, I chaired the 23rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games with 17 events for over 600 paralyzed Veteran athletes. For that I received the VA Undersecretary's Award. Afterwards, I became the Strategic/Facility Planner for the VA Long Beach HCS involved in strategic & facility planning with proposal(s) development, project management during design and construction followed by activation. d the proposals which were Congressionally approved for the construction of a 24 bed Blind Rehab Center, new Outpatient Clinics, Outpatient Pharmacy, a new Emergency Room and a Admin & Education Center. Phase II of that project also approved was for a new Eye & Optometry Clinic, Diagnostic Sleep Disorder Clinic and Specialty Care Clinics. My final proposal which was also Congressionally approved with construction currently underway is for a new Inpatient & an Outpatient Mental Health Bldgs, a 120 bed Community Living Center and a 400 space Parking structure. Overall, over a billion dollars worth of projects approved. A Fisher House for Veterans families was completed & opened this year. Having remained in the Naval Reserve, I retired in 2002 as the Command Master Chief, Naval Reserve Force, Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton.
I retired from the VA at the end of 2015. Over the years, I've traveled across the US, Canada, British Isles, Europe, Scandanavia, Russia, Estonia and Mexico(24 countries). Most years I go to Hawaii in the fall. Maybe now I'll just read a book, relax and smell the roses.Thought for the Day: Nothing is impossible. Believe in yourself.
