Alice's Story
I worked at Hallmark Cards corporate office building for 35 years. During that time I married, had a son (he's now 25 yrs. of age), divorced after 8 years of marriage, was a single parent for about ? 15 years?...then got remarried. I've been remarried now for 5 years. My husband's job has taken us to the Washington D.C. district and Maryland. Because of this move, I was forced into retirement from Hallmark, but I liked the idea of retiring in my Mid 50's. However, moving to a new place with no friends around you, makes for a boreing and frustrating life. I decided that volunteer work was the way to go. I've done a few volunteer events for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (crab ball break-down, and tree seedling potting), and I've done volunteer work at George Washington's estate, ...Expand for more
Mount Vernon. I'm very drawn to the estate of Mount Vernon. The management liked my ways with the guests and asked if I would like to work as a paid employee. I accepted a job working at Mount Vernon with Guest Services. I love helping people get aquainted with the estate. Sometimes I'm working in the Orientation Center, and sometimes in the Renolds Museum and Education centers. I'm thinking that some time I would like to become one of the Interpreters to tell people interesting facts and little known info about the people and the estate of Mount Vernon. There is nothing more pleasant than to stand on the Piazza that faces the Potomac and gaze at the river while a gentle Summer breeze brings a smile to your face, and lets you know what George Washington felt when standing there.
