Alice's Story
Almost 12 months after HS I met and married Neal Nicastro. We have been married 49 years. We have 3 grown sons and 8 grandchildren. (6 grandsons and 2 granddaughters.) We moved to California and live in the Central Valley in a town called Turlock. It is sort of like LI, but no place is ever like NY...I work at a major hospital in Modesto (I'm sure by now everyone has heard of Modesto---Scott Peterson and the Yosemite murders) Neal is retired from the school district and I am only going to work till I am 63 (now is the time) and then retire. We are looking to move to AZ when we both are retired. We love to spend time with the grandkids and love going to their sporting events. Our grandkids range in age from 29-12 yrs old. Our 18 yr old (he lives with us since he was 1 yr old) just graduated from High School....That was the 4th boy we put through High School...Life has really been great and I couldn't have asked for anything more.
I do miss living in NY, but I have all the kids here in CA. and wouldn't want to leave them right now..It is even hard thinking about retiring to AZ, but they will be old enough to hop a plane by the time we do go.
HS was a great time in my life and I think about my "friends" very often.
UPDATE: 4/12--Still in Ca but did retire last yr when I turned 63. Our grandson who lived with us in now in the Navy and doing GREAT!!!!! He has been to Libya, Crete, Italy, Spain---where he spent his 21st birthday with buddies---he has also been to Portugal,the Rock of Gibraltar, and has swam in the Mediterranean Sea ....We went to Va in Feb.2012 and the Navy bused us to N Carolina where Micheal's ship came in after 10 1/2 months on deployment to Libya---the longest deployment in 40 years of Navy history---We were able to get on the ship (USS BATAAN) and spend 3 days with him and sailed from N Carolina to Norfolk Va. We had such a great time and what an experience it was....
I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a not such a good idea. As it turns out, they were wrong.
I like to relax by reading a good book while curled up on my sofa with a blanket. I also love to scrap book and have made 2 for my Navy grandson, Michael.
I don't have a hero, but what gives me the strength and motivation to keep working day after day is to remember what my dad told me. It was that it didn't always matter what you did to earn a living even if you have to shovel dirt (he didn't actually say dirt, but I can't say what he did say) against the tide to make an honest dollar then you do it. I know as long as I do my best and work hard then it is well worth it.
I don't really like sports, but will watch baseball as long as it is a NY team. Reality T...Expand for more
V stinks. We no longer have pets but my grandson has fish. My obsession really is reading. I will read anything I can get my hands on especially Nora Roberts and JD Robb..First I like to read the book and then see the movie and see how different it is from the book.
If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my kitchen and add on a family room. My dream home would be just what I have now with the above improvements because Neal and I did it on our own..
I learned from my kids that just because you are the adult it doesn't always make you right. They have an opinion also and as long as it is said respectfully, they can voice their opinion.
If I won $100 million, I'd give a lot of it to St Jude Hospital , then spend the rest on my grandkids, my boys and me and Neal.
My current age is 60. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely wrong ---thank goodness.
My best friend would tell you I'm very loyal, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as a snob.
I dress the way I want to. I have never worried about what people think of the way I dress. I know while in HS my friends and I used to trade clothes so I guess my choices weren't that bad...
I share my home with my husband and grandson Michael, which I find very nice. Not quite empty nest , but close enough..
In 10 years, I hope to be alive and retired. I'm going to get there by doing what I am doing and trying to stay healthy and active.
My oldest friend would be Barbara (McKlinskey) Greenlee. I don't remember how we met but we have been friends for over 45 years. We have shared a lot thru the years and she is the only one I can tell my deepest darkest secrets to ( there is also Virginia (Driscoll) Bender. We stay in touch, but not as often as Barbara and I. We just know each other inside and out, and have been there for each other thru thick and thin..Love ya Barb
My first job was at S.Kleins on Vets Hwy, where I got paid $1..20 an hour to be a sales person. What I remember most about it is that is on payday a bunch of us would go out dancing at Osborns..
I cannot remember the wildest thing I did in school, and if I could I probably wouldn't be able to put it into print anyway,,,HA
My biggest surprise in life is that Neal and I have accomplished so much on our own and never depended on others to get what we want.
The teacher I would love to see again is Mr. Bellararado to show him I did succeed in life and my counselor Mr. Phillips to thank him for all his hard work and for keeping me on the straight and narrow. Oh and Mr Polo cause he was soooo cute.
