Alicia's Story
Life
Alicia Jackson, better known as "Smooth Striding Senior", graduted from "Sweetland" with dreams of building a better tomorrow....yeah right, all she wanted to do was PARTY!!!
That summer, she worked hard to solve the problem of passing for 18 (while looking 14) to get into the hottest clubs in D.C.
To her disappointment, some 15 years later, she is still trying to pass for 18 (while looking 14) to get into the hottest clubs in D.C. 8^D
Some 20 years later, she still looks, she still acts the same...well she's a little more sociable and she is still a wonderful person to know.
School
Did you know that Suitland, at the time, was one of the few (if not the only) schools to have open lunch in PG County? W/that said, how can we NOT remember Mr. Battle and the daily reminder to, "Please stay off the LaRein school campus!"?
The "CREW" (Bryan, Jere, Jeri, Julie, Jillian, Doug, Lowell, Me) would clip coupons on Sunday for lunch specials at Rustlers...heck, I ate better in high school for lunch than I do now!
For us track-sters, open lunch was more of a family affair...1/2 hour in Mr. Flecther's office disciplining our minds and the other 1/2 was like Sunday dinner.
Ms Betty, the team bus driver and Suitland Rams BIGGEST fan!
Speaking of T&F....BOOM-BOOM-BOOM!
I remember one late night, we had just returned form a track meet and a bunch of us got off the bus near PennMar. We found an abandon shopping cart and we thru all of our stuff in and one of us was on top. We were running thru the neighborhoods and then the cops started chasing us....no worries, we were all on the TRACK TEAM!
There were several teachers along the way, but Mrs Fosster (FSK-9th Grade Govt/Civics) and Mrs Mann (SHS-12th Grade Grammer/Comp).
My biggest crush was William Dorsey! I thought he was the most handsome and well dressed guy in school, and when he got his hands on a piano....STOP! My most memoriable moment was when he wore a pair of jeans and sneaks to school and they were teasing him because they were not the "latest". He let them know that they were never going to the the "latest" because he prefered (okay mainly wore) slacks and dress shoes...such the MAN!
Every morning after a track meet in 1st period English with Mrs Stephens was an event...especially since I hardly ever showed, so I would catch it the following morning.
College
She started out as a member of the women's X-Country and Track&Field teams, but due to injuries retired after 1 year.
Following her short t...Expand for more
rack career, she became a member of the nationally ranked women's bowling team...YES, IT IS A REAL SPORT!!!
In her senior spring semester with 3 credits to go, she decided to "Be All that She could Be" and add another two years, another 24 credit hours and another major to her resume.
During those two years, she drilled with a CEWI USAR unit. The active duty guys there were wonderful and took very good care of the cadet. One 3-day drill after they locked the gates, we jumped the fence and drove into Philly and down to South street. Since it was drill, all we had to wear were BDU...but it was South Street! IT was also the weekend that I learned just how much fun going to the field could be...I mean we brought a gas grill, cooked steak-uums and drank ouzo(no I can't spell it, it's a greek clear liquor).
End results included a double major in Management and Marketing from Temple University in May of 1991 and a Regular Army ROTC Commission as an Ordnance 2LT.
Along the way, she learned what she was made off and understood there was nothing she could not survive!
Workplace
I worked one summer at burger king and it was a significant emotional event! and that all I have to say about that!
I have had one job my entire adult life...being a Soldier. During my career, I have had several duty titles, especially since I moved every 1 - 1.5 years from '92 - '96. Then things slowed down and I average about 2.5 years per duty station.
When I leave my current location, I will have three years to retire...and then I can get a job!
The best part is going to a new place, meeting new people and experiencing new things and challenges. The worst part is leaving behind family, friends and loved ones.
