Allan's Story
As many of you know, my adult life has been spent in the US Air Force. Within a few weeks of graduating from Finney in June 1969, I was starting basic training at the Air Force Academy. (I hear that Woodstock was much more fun that summer!) I retired with the rank of colonel in June 2003 after completing 30 years of commissioned service. Throughout my career, I flew jet transports (C-141 Lockheed Starlifter), taught US and military history at the Air Force Academy and Air Command & Staff College, and served in various staff/command jobs, including nearly 5 years in the Pentagon.
I have been married twice. I met my first wife while I was a graduate student at Indiana University, and we were married in June 1974. We had two children -Christy (b. 1979) and David (b. 1986). I married my second wife, Barbara, in 1997. I actually met her when I was an Air Force Academy cadet while on a trip to Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio (that is why I live in Dayton now). We dated for about a year and went our separate ways. I met her again in the 1990s when she was widowed a...Expand for more
nd working in the Pentagon as an Air Force civilian, right around the corner from my office! I usually don't believe in fate, but this is a coincidence that's hard to ignore!
For those of you who remember me from high school, I still play the trumpet, but I put it away for about 25 years. At Finney, I played in the concert band and stage band. At the Air Force Academy, I played in the cadet pep band and helped start the Cadet Drum & Bugle Corps, where I served as a soloist and first commander. I stopped playing when I entered grad school in June 1973 and didn't pick it up again until the fall of 1998. Since then, I've played in adult community bands and as a semi-pro in several swing bands (much like the Finney stage band). In the fall of 2004, I returned to colleg to study music full time and should graduate with a bachelors in music education in Nov 2008. In the future, I hope to teach a little and play some jazz in the local Dayton-Cincinnati area.
