Allan's Story
After we graduated from Cherry Creek High School, I went to college at Gunnison for a year and Fort Collins for a year. I went into the U.S. Army for two years as draftsman and land surveyor. Our engineering battalion was not doing much construction during the Vietnam War
(hmmm), so the army changed me over to administering security clearances for officers and enlisted men. After leaving the army, the G.I. Bill paid for a large chunk of my schooling as a teacher.
During the army I was exposed to blues music, so I added Stevie Ray Vaughan, Janis Joplin to the usual 60s Rock and Folk Music of Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul and Mary. Credence Clearwater Revival and Crosby Stills Nash and Young were added during the early 70's. The alpine skiing, bicycling and hiking were the exercise for that part of my life.
I returned to Western State and completed the classes for middle and elementary school instruction, and met my wife, Phyllis. She paints oil landscapes. After moves to Gunnison and then Grand Junction, we settled down in Paonia, Colorado. We got involved in organic gardening, ranch work on the family ranch, as I taught middle school. We raised our children, Jason and Kendra. Jason currently is an Oncology Nurse and Kendra is a Lutheran Pastor. During twenty-four years of teaching, I enjoyed my classes in Algebra, Physical Geography, Reading, Colorado History, Computer Coding and Appli...Expand for more
cations. Do you remember the Apple IIe's? Technology classes in the early 80s were very interesting... Phyllis and I continued to do organic gardening through the years.
In 1998, I retired from teaching and attended undergraduate and graduate studies in business and accounting at current day Colorado Mesa University. In 2001, In December, I began work for the Defense Contract Management Agency after September 11 caught America by the devastating reality of terrorism. Phyllis and I moved to Culpeper Virginia to be close to work and training. I specialized in contingency contracting and cost/price analysis. The contingency contracting took me to Afghanistan for four and one-half tours in various parts of the country. Essentially, I was an Administrative Contracting Officer, in charge of disbursing funds to Kellogg Brown and Root for their compliance of the contractual agreement to feed and supply other services for the American troops in the field. In 2011, we moved back to Longmont, CO. I retired from DCMA in 2016 from the Federal Center where I did government cost/price analysis of new bids from Ball Corporation, middle and small sized contractors. Since that time till now, I have read extensively in regenerative or carbon farming. That is where I focus my time when we aren't hiking or biking or listening to Blues.
