Allen's Story

After HPHS, I had t freshman year at TCU,, then transferred to Duke, where I majored in English. In my senior year I had two plays produced, one at Duke the other at NCU. Spent two years at Vanderbilt Divinity School, long enough to know that my religious belief was far too weak to be a pastor. But at Vandy I met Hella, now my wife for over 50 years. Went back to Duke for a Ph. D. in religion, which I've never taught. Taught English at Clemson for one horrible year, then four years at James Madison (philosophy), two at Michiga State (western civ), then helped found Kirkland College (defunct) then helped found Richard Stockton College of NJ--where I taught philosophy and (odd thing ahead!) horticulture, reflecting an interest in plants ever since age 12 when I worked at Nicholson's Seed S...Expand for more
tore in the HP Village. I published acholarly book on the Spanish philosophy Unamuno and co-transated two of his books for Princeton University Press. By an odd quirk I became garden columnist first for The Wall Street Journal (5 years) and then for the NY Times (7). I have written or edited 13 books on gardening, all out of print, but good reviews are still on Amazon. Have 2 fine sons and 5 grandkids, all star athletes (surprise on that one!!!) I started smoking in 1950, smoked heavily until 1997, when after surgery for lung cancer I decidied to quit. Oh yes, I am professor emeritus now, also volunteer curator of the Linwood Arboretum at Belhaven, which I helped found three years ago. It is America's smallest arboretum, but it has gotten some good attention in the horticultural world.
