Allen's Story
Updated 20 February 2022…
If you’re reading my update, I hope everything’s going well for you and your family (if applicable). Even though I didn’t graduate with Orange Park High School, I still remember that class more than I do the class I did graduate with at Cox High School (in Virginia Beach) – I moved to VA right before my senior year at OPHS – that sucked. I’d been in Orange Park since the 7th grade and then I moved right before my senior year.
After I graduated from Cox High School (in 1990) in VA, I joined the Marine Corps. I did my minimum four years and got out as a corporal/E-4. Fast forward four years… In 1998, I attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. I didn’t feel I was working toward anything special so I went back to the Marine Corps recruiters asking to reenlist – that didn’t happen due to the Marine Corps’ strict policy on visible tattoos (total BS). After multiple attempts with the Marine recruiter in that recruiting office, I decided to visit the Navy recruiters down the hall – and joined the Navy in June 1999. The Navy accepted me, but as an E-3 – I took a pay cut.

staying in the Navy for the next sixteen years and got to visit a LOT of great countries that I’d have never seen had I stayed a civilian – for that, I am thankful. I was home-based in CA for my entire sixteen years… the majority of it in San Diego.
I completed 20-years in the military and retired in 2015. I completed my bachelor’s degree right before I retired and earned my master’s degree (in political science) three years later.
After the Navy, I moved to Charlotte, NC (for four years), and didn’t like it. In 2020, I moved to Rio Rancho, NM (close to Albuquerque), and now work for the Department of Energy as a munitions’ specialist (ammunition accountant).
I’m 50-years-old now, retired, own a home, two trucks, a Harley-Davidson, and have never been married nor have a family (hence how I can afford my vehicle collection – haha).
I do wish I’d have been able to stay in Orange Park and graduate with the people I’d known since the 7th grade. My senior year (the best year, right?) ended up being nothing to write home about. Oh well, life goes on…
Again, if you’ve read this, I hope you’re doing well.
