Allyn's Story

After high school I wandered around searching for quite awhile. In and out of school, I settled when I finally moved to the mountains. I learned to ski in Alta, Utah and have lived there in the winters for 35 years. Backpacking, learning the mandolin, playing music in a group, all helped me ground myself. Going to graduate school (in painting-fine arts) was a fantastic experience. I got everything I'd hoped out of it and much more. I've had shows and sold things which strengthened my confidence. I don't really like the business aspect of art, but I continue to teach in one way or another. I taught at the University of Utah for a number of years, at a small elementary school in Alta, and now I just teach one on one. I like starting with kids when they are 1 to 2 years old. I'm good at it and it's a blast for me too. Travel also taught me a lot. I feel very lucky to have been to Mexico, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, France, Japan, England, Scotland, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Thailand and Tibet. I met my partner for life, Jerry, in Alta. He's half Japanese, a Yale graduate, and an artist. He drove a school bus in Berkeley in the ...Expand for more
60's. We built our house together, an accomplishment we are both proud of. We don't have kids (a regret of mine), or pets (we travel too much), but feel lucky to have lots of friends, and fun with family. Teaching young kids allows me to have very close relationships with kids, which really nurtures me. We totally lucked out financially and are now retired but continue to work on art projects. We each have a studio in our house. I finally allowed myself to get treated for chronic depression which changed my life for the better. Both my parents are still alive and I feel particularly blessed about that. They continue to be amazingly supportive, loving teachers, using humor, honesty and loving kindness to show me the way. They are two very unique and special people. I know I'm lucky. My spiritual teachings come from Buddhism and many other philosophies. My two favorite books lately are "The Wisdom of No Escape" by Pema Chodran, and "The New Planet" by Eckhart Tolle. Now that I'm getting used to being retired I hope to continue painting, drawing, sculpting, sewing, playing music, do more writing and continue working with kids making art.
