Alvin's Story

Life Hi Y'all, Hope the years have been good to you and yours. I've had wonderful years since high school. It's interesting to look back on my early life. At GHS Ms Busse the Vice Principal said to my parents during a conference that, "he is not academically inclined and will not go vary far in life, so he should pursue industrial arts as opposed to college prep courses". Consequently, I took mostly shop classes and later struggled mightly the first couple years in engineering school to overcome my grossly inadequate HS education, then went on to get electrical engineering and industrial psychology undergrad degrees, an MBA and a Doctorate in International Finance and Management at Pace U in NYC. Ms. Busse should only know. Perhaps she was my motiviation. After a 4 year hitch in the USAF, I worked my way up to Corporate VP positions with global management responsibility at ITT, General Instrument, and Revlon. While at Revlon I was asked to form and chair a national advisory council for Quality and Productivity during the Reagan administration. Three years of that, a new national business model developed (TQM), and some global recognition and credentials, I bailed from working for others to form my own global management consulting company in 1980. I specialized in corporate turn-arounds and productivity improvement mostly with US corporations in their operations worldwide. I did accept some Canadian clients and couldn'...Expand for more
t turn down Saudi Aramco and a couple other Middle East oil companies. I wouldn't work there now though! In the late '90's I was asked to be a charter member on a think-tank at Lehigh University working on a Congressonaly funded project, under the National Science Foundation, to develop a new business model to enable the U.S. to remain globally competitive in the 21st Century. The result was the parameters of the Agile Virtual Enterprise, much of which businesses are just now implementing. Our development work there is captured in my book, "Transitioning to Agility, Creating the 21st Century Enterprise", and implemented by my consulting company. I spun my consulting business off to younger partners a few years ago, and now build high-end houses in what was a red hot real estate market, but still ok in high-end areas. It's great. No more global business travel in these difficult and dangerous times. I now just locate a good piece of property and turn it over to a contractor to build a great house, then turn that over to a realtor to get me my profit, while I enjoy life. Can't beat that with a stick as they say. Would love to hear from more of you. I'm in Mountain Lakes, NJ, so if you come this way please get in touch so we can chat about good old times. You're more than welcome to stay here as a base for day trips to NYC, the Jersey shore, or wherever, as hotels get very expensive around here. Best wishes to all. Al
