Amanda's Story
Life
Wow...where to start? I left Colorado Springs as quickly as possible and went to school at CU. I had a great time working on my BA English and doing the sorority thing. After college, I taught 7th and 8th grade English for two years; I loved having my own classroom! I married my high school sweetheart, divorced my high school sweetheart, which, although tough at the time, has meant good things for me. Three years later, I've finished my master's degree in journalism. I gave teaching another go last year...sometimes my loyalty goes too far. I finally switched gears and now live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I work for a newspaper as a copy editor. I'm just trying to adjust to life in a new place. It's exciting! Beyond that? I try not to plan too far ahead...new doors always open when the time is right! I would love to continue writing; I would love to edit magazines or novels. I'll see! Strangely, four years ago I was on the verge of being a complete domestic...wife, mother. Today, I think there's plenty of time for all that. I'm in no hurry, but I know one day I want those things in my life...I always have.
School
I laugh when I think about how much drama we all brought into our own lives and each others' back then. I also laugh ...Expand for more
when I think about senior year and how quickly word got around on the days that chicken fried steak was on the menu :) I get nostalgic every now and then, but I'm definitely glad it's over! Hopefully we're all on to bigger and better things!
College
College was a blast, but I've always been in such a damn hurry to see the next step in my life that I have trouble slowing down to enjoy the moment.
I was in CU's marching band for a year (that was enough), joined a sorority (which kept me occupied) and studied a lot.
I went BACK to CU for graduate school two years later and loved what I was doing. I was a graduate instructor for an electronic information strategies class. I taught junior and senior undergraduates, which was a lot of fun and a nice change from middle-schoolers. I made great connections, had a fun internship in San Jose after my second year and now here I am....
Still wanting to see what's next!
Workplace
You know....I really don't want to be just a cog in a wheel. I'm constantly exploring and evaluating my career goals. I'm restless, but I feel good about my recent career shift. Copy editing is definitely a strength, and I've always loved words and language. For now, I'm concentrating on adjusting to my new career.
