Amberlina's Story

The summer after graduation, filled with Black pride and the spirit of the '60's, on a detour from Arkansas (on vacation) to Chicago, I sat at a little lunch counter in the middle of Mississippi, on the edge of a cottonfield, in the middle of the night... no TV cameras, no Dr. King (although later I marched with him), just this 16 year old and the Klan, and demanded to be served. Had a stint in the U.S. Air Force where I met my now-deceased husband, as well as my 2 babies so beautiful everyone wanted a peek at them, who gave me 4 gorgeous 6 foot+ grandsons, a petite granddaughter and 2 great grandchildren. Took care of a 2 kids, 5 dogs and a house while finishing college with a "B" average; wrote 2 books which sold several hundred thousand copies and are in (at last count) 18 libraries and collections, both public and private, across the world. Forged several African connections in my journey thus far: The eminent historian, Dr. John Henrik Clarke once used me in a sentence with Cleopatra and Elizabeth Taylor - "And this young lady," he said, pointing directly at me from a...Expand for more
university stage with hundreds in the audience, "looks more like Cleopatra than Elizabeth Taylor!" Not to mention Nana Zulu, a princess of the Zulu Nation in South Africa and descendant of the great Chaka Zulu, who gave me several big, big hugs and grinned her way up at me and into my heart; The Africa connection I think I cherish most, however, is Sima, a beautiful Ghanian beggar whom I refused to give money that would feed her for a day, instead taught her how to MAKE money and fed her for a lifetime. I've been an artist all my life, even sold sketches in Washington Park, as well as took Saturday classes at the Art Institute. But it was at age 73 that I discovered a new "gift", i.e., I can elicit "joy" out of a brush, some face paint, and words of truth and sincere praise (kids are human lie detectors). At age 75, I discovered that a 'boast' I made after my husband died, i.e., "I'll be going out on dates when I'm 80!" turned out to be prescient. Rejected one proposal of marriage and had my last date just before COVID and am looking forward to my next when it's over....lol
