The summer after graduation, filled with Black pride and the spirit of the '60's, on a detour from Arkansas (on vacation) to Chicago, I sat at a little lunch counter in the middle of Mississippi, on the edge of a cottonfield, in the middle of the night... no TV cameras, no Dr. King (although later I marched with him), just this 16 year old and the Klan, and demanded to be served. Had a stint in the U.S. Air Force where I met my now-deceased husband, as well as my 2 babies so beautiful everyone wanted a peek at them, who gave me 4 gorgeous 6 foot+ grandsons, a petite granddaughter and 2 great grandchildren. Took care of a 2 kids, 5 dogs and a house while finishing college with a "B" average; wrote 2 books which sold several hundred thousand copies and are in (at last count) 18 libraries and collections, both public and private, across the world.
