Amelia's Story

Life... David Carpenter and I married in 1968 and divorced in 1980. We had three children: David, Jr.; Antony, and Wendy. We share eight grandchildren; Cody, Bethanie, Mellisa, Christian, Israel, Evelyn, Sara, and Clementine. Dave, Jr., (our oldest) and his family live in Independence, MO. His wife is Stephanie Cummings. They met in high shcool. His oldest, Cody, has made us great-grandparents to Landon and Casey. Dave and Stephanie's second born, Bethanie, and her baby daddy, Nick Byrd, are no longer a couple but gave us our precious great-granddaughter, Brooklyn, and great-grandson, Mason. Wendy and her husband, Steve Hicks, relocated from Santa Maria, CA, to the Kansas City, MO area. They, too, are no longer a couple as well. Their daughter, Mellisa, decided not to continue college. I home-schooled her from birth through 3rd grade before they moved to MO. I volunteered around that time tutoring hispanic children how to read the English language at a school that Mellisa attended just before moving to MO. It was a blast. Twelve years later, they [Steve and Wendy] had Sara. She will live a life of autism [bless her heart]. Mellisa and her special someone, Marshall Brooks, have blessed us with our 4th, absolutely, adorable great-grandson, Cameron Don Brooks. Cameron will also live a life with autism. Antony, my second son, is now living wherever he can find a place he can rest his head. Please pray for my son. Thank you. In addition to issues in his life that he chooses, his beautiful wife, Jerelyn, passed away 8/22/05 due to an auto accident that also took their unborn son, Ezekiel Jonathan. Soon after, I became the guardian of Antony's children. They were 14 months to 11 years at the time of the accident. The two boys, Israel and Christian are both on their own now and appear to be settling into a routine of work and responsibility of living life. Unfortunately, my husband, Jon, didn't share my need to care for my grandchildren, seeing they weren't his bio grandchildren and/or due to the fact that he never had children and wasn't sure he'd be able to handle it all. So, I took all the kids to a rental house for 9 years, alone, until the boys left, and now back with Jon in 2014, with the girls too. He figured he could handle them. He's not so sure about that either. He's struggling when it comes to messes and defiance. We all do, I think, but we deal with it. Prior to the accident, my occupation had mostly been as an administrative assistant/bookkeeper. I spent the seasons of 1978/79 and 1979/80 as an Oakland Raiders' NFL Cheerleader. Check out on You Tube a video you'll find listed 1978 Jerry Lewis Telethon with Johnny Lee and the Raiderettes. I'll be the one about center front and just to the right behind Johnny as he sings in front of us girls. When you get to the video, fast forward to about 20. It will start with Mickey Gilley, Johnny's best friend. We'll come on right after that. When that's over, fast forward to 40 to see more. There's a close up of me in platinum blonde hair laughing like a fool. Lol. We did three other dances during the telethon that weekend with just us girls performing. So far, no one has found those on video. I also did some modeling and went on to jazz dance, and sing country music professionally as the lead singer in two separate bands. Traveled to Japan, Hawaii, and Alaska as an entertainer and model. Gave my life to Jesus Christ in 1979. I met, Jon Braucher, in our church's singles' group and we married in 1982. We chose not to have children. I worked for many years as a private, in-home caregiver, but needed to let my clients go to care for my grandchildren full-time. On weekends, [if I could find a way to work it in my s...Expand for more
chedule] I would go around from two to five convalescent/retirement homes and sing to them and tell them about Jesus. Boy! I'm tired just thinking about it all. In my teens I wanted to be a graphic designer or a shoe designer. Boy did I get off course. I have been on disability, just prior to Jerelyn’s death, due to fibromyalgia chronic pain, and now retired from any form of outside work due to sciatica and osteoarthritis in my spine. It is not fun and I'm sure many of our Westporters may be in a similar place with health issues. My hero is - and my inspiration comes from - Jesus. He holds me together so I don't crack. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Antony Hull, because I want to tell him my son was named after him. I always loved that name the first time I heard it. He and I would dance together quite a bit at Tiger Den. I remember his suit he'd wear would change different colors as he moved. Lol I've had several poems published and received awards for them. Within 10 years, I hope to be basking on a tropical island. I'm going to get there by any means I can - with no husband or any kids. Yay! My first real job was when I was 14 and working at the Dairy Queen on Linwood (now Costco), where I got paid...who knows how much...to make banana splits, ice cream cones, dilly bars, and ice cream sandwiches. What I remember most about it is older guys cruising Sidney's drive-in coming over to flirt with me and ask me out. Fun times but never went out with them. My second job was working at Norm Zesto's Drive-in on Westport Road. It was a fun time back then along with the McGee gang of girls: Sharon and Vickie Stevens, Janet Nickell, Sharla Archigo, Roseann and Sue Petrus, Clydith Noe, and we (I) can't forget my bestie guy friend, Ricky Scott. Vickie and Clydith gave me the most thoughtful, best ever baby shower I could possibly have for my son, David Carpenter, Jr. David was born March 5, 1968. A happy day for me and a whole new direction in life for me started that day. A childhood memory I'll never forget around the age of twelve is when I'd go out in the rain and wash my hair from the rain gutters to make it shiny and soft. Thanks for allowing me to share, my friends, and may God Bless you all. UPDATE: My son, Antony, is finally chosen to conquer his demons of drug addiction. He is being self-sufficient and working full time. His son, Christian, has joined him and reestablished their relationship. I am so proud of him. Thank you all for your prayers. Update: My oldest grandson, Cody, and girlfriend, Anna, has the cutest, precious babygirl, Casey Rae, who came into this world on 8/14/17. Tragedy: My only daughter, Wendy, passed from complications from mixing alcohol with Benadryl, of all things, on 6/3/18. I’m so sad and devastated. I miss her so much. Update: Antony has slipped back into his drug use again but still living with his son, Christian. More prayers are needed, for both of them, if you would please. Update: My oldest son, David, is living with me and my husband since the middle of 2018. He too struggles with choices he’s made and has split from his wife. He has many health issues, diabetes included. He’s struggling physically and emotionally. Please pray for him to want to progress in life and not look back at what he’s lost. Thank you. Tragedy 2020: It’s the saddest thing. My newest great-granddaughter, Casey Rae, has just lost her mama, at the age of 3, to chronic drugs and alcohol. I had no idea... It breaks my heart and I continue being angry that drugs and alcohol is destroying our family over and over again. Please keep my grandson, Cody, and great-granddaughter, Casey Rae, in prayer also. Thank you, Westporters.
