Amy's Story

Life I have been doing a variety of jobs over the last 20 years. I skate professionaly for Rollerblade, and have had the opportuntity to travel the country teaching and performing. I ran the learn to skate program at Shady Side Academy for 4 years... a far cry from good old McGuffey. I work in the mental health/mental retardation field as a life skills coach. I tried being a case manager but hated it becasue I didn't have enought direct contact with the people I was serving. I also work part time for the City of Pittsburgh department of parks and recreation at the Schenley Park ice rink. I am an assistant manager there in the winter. I also do some freelance photography. I have had oportunities to shoot a lot of skting and cycling events as well as concerts. I shot Lance Armstrong when he was here for the Thrift drug Clssic years ago and was the official event phtographer when he was here last october. I have had about 20 of my photos published in national magazines. No husband, no kids.... I have two wonderful nieces to spoil! Todd adopted Leighann from China 2 1/2 years ago and she is an absolute joy. Beth has a daughter, Jillian who just turned two. She is a handfull and wilder than her mother. auntie Amy spoils them rotten! I have 2 wonderful dogs that take up a lot of my time. Frodo is an Austalian Shepherd mixed with a beagle. He is a year old. I adopted him from a rescue in Ohio last May. He is very unique looking... perfect dog for someone who was voted most unique by her senior class. Gremlin is a boston terrier/pit bull mix. I brought her home from the Humane society last October. Her past owner abused her, so she has been a challenge to raise. She is small, but solid muscle! We call her "girlie beast". I volunteer at the Humane Society. I saw the first sunrise of the new millenium from the beach in Gisborne, New Zealand. It was one of the more meaningful times in my life. Gisborne is the first place in the world to see the...Expand for more
sun rise. I went on a 650 mile bike tour and spent a lot of time absorbing the culture and meeting the natives. I hope to go back in the near future. I am not sure, but I think I married the chief of one of the Maori tribes!! There was a ceremony, I got a necklace and we rubbed noses, which is about as intimiate as the Maori's get in public. I trashed my shoulder playing rugby there. It was so hard to ride the last 189 miles with my shoulder torn up. Dr, Bradley told me that it was worse than the ones he has seen with NFL football players. I told him that I playing a real sport! All of the hard play and skating endlessly has taken a toll on me though. I am an orthopedic surgeons dream.... 2 shoulder surgeries, 2 knee surgeries, 6 on my right foot and ankle, one on the left ankle and one on each wrist. Somehow, I always manage to overcome and continue to skate. I have a pretty serious shoulder injury that slowed me down considerably. A snowboarder ran me over and the shoulder cannot be repaired without causing more harm than good. I am learning to live with it, but I really do miss whitewater rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, short track speedskating and a lot of the other crazy things I used to do. I have learned to look at what I have done in my life and am at peace with the fact that I have done more in the first 38 years of my life than most others do in a lifetime. I don't know too many people that have rollerbladed on top of the Eiffel tower in Paris and skiid the French Alps in the same weekend. Now that they have an ice rink there, I have to go back!! For now, I am happy with the limited skating that I do and with taking Frodo and Gremlin to the dog park and running with them. Scott Hamilton and I are still great frineds! He has introduced me to so many people over the years, and I was there for him when his father died, went to his wedding and have spent endless hours on the phone with him helping him through his cancer treatments.
