Amy's Story

Life Hi everyone. It's been fun poking around everyone's bio so I guess it's time to do one of my own. For those of you I didn't see at the ten year (and I couldn't make the 20) here it is. I left the day of my graduation party when the Marine recruiters took me to Parris Island for boot camp. I graduated from the Naval School of Music and was sent to Marine Barracks Washington D.C.. I was a bugler in the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, The Commandant's Own. I was married to a Marine from the Barracks for 11 years. After I left the service, I worked for aerospace at McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach, on the military cargo project, the C-17 Globemaster on the flight ramp. After I got tired of the lay-offs and downsizing...AND I missed being in boots and uniforms every day, I decided to switch gears and try something else... I joined the LAPD. I was still a recruit in the Academy at the 10 year when I saw most of you last, and I've been doing it ever since. I'm currently a Sergeant of Police...I kinda got used to being called "Sarge" I guess me a lifer....I've had an exciting and interesting career (see the workplace tab) and I enjoy hearing from you all from time to time. I live in Santa Clarita. I'm divorced. I don't have children, but I am keeping a small, hyperactive Jack Russell, a Siamese cat and a flop-earred rabbit in a manner to which they have now all become accustomed! I wish the very best to all of you, lass of 1984...and I hope to see you in 2014! School The teacher who inspired me to be better than any person I could have ever imagined I could become, is John Merkovsky. He wasn't just our band director...he demanded that you pull out the stops and raise your own personal bar. His leadership inspired me not just to dream...big...but pursue that dream with gusto! YOU STONES!!!! Remember the stones on his desk given to him as a gift from all of the ROCKS in his class? How sad and regretable that MS silenced the beautiful music he encouraged others to make. And yet, another teacher who was simply McDreamy... College College? It's on my "To Do" list! LOL... Workplace As careers go, I've had a really great one. The people I've met, worked with and the training with officers from law enforcement agencies around the world has been amazing. In the various disciplines that I have studied, and remaining on the LAPD Honor Guard as the Department bugler, I have done some pretty interesting things. I started out on patrol in Rampart then moved right along to working the footbeats in the Southeast housing projects in Watts. I went back into the Marine Cor...Expand for more
ps and did another 5 years at 3rd ANGLICO in Long Beach as their NBC Chief and PMI. I worked as a Field Training Officer in the Harbor, where I also became a Drug Recognition Expert, and eventually a DRE instructor. I caught the teaching bug and transferred back to the Academy, this time as a Firearm and Chemical Agent Instructor. I enjoyed teaching the finer art of marksmanship to recruits, but found my home on the range...the rifle range! I spent a significant portion of my tour as an Urban Police Rifle and Tactical Shotgun instructor after the North Hollywood Shootout, and discovered a love of the shooting sports. Since shooting anything less than a 1/2 mile away is like cheating, I specialized in large bore service rifle at the 600 yd distance range. I made Sergeant and worked in various divisions around the San Fernando Valley. After 911, I tuned back into my Chemical Agents background and have been instructing officers in the First Responder Operators Course, teaching Chemical Agents and improvised explosive devices to in-service officers. I am currently transitioning into teaching the advanced Incident Command System to the command staff of the Department and City Fire, and am currently working as a Staff Researcher. I hope someday to expand my training and experience into an instructing field, to the betterment of law enforcement community, for the Department of Homeland Security. At least it sounds good on my resume! Military I had a great time in the Drum Corps after Boot Camp. Mr. Merkovsky would have been proud. I had the privilege of travelling to interesting places marching in field shows with the Color Guard of the Marine Corps and Silent Drill Platoon. My favorite? Australia...Second to Guitmo Bay (BEFORE Abugrabe of course) lots of memories. After I got off probation in the Police Dept, I missed the Corps and years later went back in as an NBC Specialist. For those not into the acronyms, it's a Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Warfare Defense Specialst. I spent a lot of time in the Gas chamber, dressed down in Chem suits and gas masks, making LOTS of people miserable! I did a lot of cool stuff, and had some awesome training in places like the Army Chemical School's live nerve agent chamber, and Radiological Operations Training at the Defense Nuclear Weapons School. I branched out a little, training at Quantico VA, as a Rifle and Handgun Primary Marksmanship Insructor (PMI). This lead later into a lucrative transition into the Civilian Marksmanship Program as a rifle expert. I've been competing in Large Bore Service Rifle Competitions for the LAPD Rifle Team.
