Andrea's Story
Life
Left high school in 1979 to pursue career in computers. Married in 1987, divorced in 1993. Relocated to bay area in 1997. Have been playing bridge avidly since 1995. Met my soulmate at a bridge tournament in Reno, Nevada, on December 26, 1998 and married him in Reno on December 26, 1999. Relocated to Vancouver, Washington (near Portland, Oregon) in 2001 after being laid off from Sony. Graduated from Clark College in 2004 with AAS degree. Relocated to Tigard, Oregon to be closer to my new job (July 2005).
School
I left high school at 16 to take computer classes at West LA Community College. I was also working, and found that I preferred working to attending classes. I quit going to school for about 25 years.
College
June 2004 - Graduated with honors from Clark College in Vancouver, Washington with an Associate in Applied Science as a Computer Network Administrator.
Workplace
In June of 1978, when I started working at Information International Inc., also known as Triple-I, I was 15 1/2 years old and had just completed 10th grade. I was supposed to fill in for a week or so for a secretary who was on vacation. At the end of the summer, I was still working, and moved to the stockroom to a part-time job. I took the CHSPE and moved from high school to WLA College to take computer classes. In June 1979, I was laid off but immediately rehired in a computer-related position. Two years later I was laid off again, but I had already locate...Expand for more
d a new position as a programmer.
I was only with Dames & Moore for about 7 months. I hated the commute to downtown LA and I hated having to pay for parking. I left and went to Teleflora. I was at Teleflora for about a year, and left to change careers from programming to technical writing at Informatics General Corp.
I was at Informatics for about two years, did a little programming for Triple-I, and then started my own desktop publishing business, LaserSet Graphics.
After 5 years, I rejoined the workforce as a technical writer at Teradata, but I kept LaserSet going too. When AT&T bought NCR shortly after NCR bought Teradata, I was laid off and began working on various technical writing contracts.
I moved into technical support when I went to work for Mark V Systems. When Mark V Systems folded, I took some time off but eventually moved to Software Technologies Corp., supporting their DataDental software product.
I decided I wanted to live in the bay area, as I had many friends there, so in 1997 I went to work for WebFlow, a startup company in Santa Clara. WebFlow didn't make it either, so I went to Sony Electronics.
When my project at Sony ended in 2001, I was once again laid off and I relocated to the Pacific Northwest where I was unable to find a job for four years. As of May 2005, I am happily ensconced at Providence Health System in their System Information Services group and looking forward to a long relationship with them.
