Andreas's Story
The Class of 1975 seems so long ago and then like only yesterday. As 2010 is upon us, it has been 35 years since I walked the halls of CCI. While we went every day for five years, most have not been back very often. I know in the 35 years, I have been back twice: once for my brother¿s graduation and once for a reunion. Both of these happened within five years of graduating.
While my class mates went off in different directions, my path was to spend three years in Engineering Technology school, then 16 years with National Defence in Quality. This brought an opportunity to go back to school and get an MBA which I completed in 1993. All sorts of new Classmates came from that experience. As well I learned how to handle full time work and 35 hours of week of school.
In 1994, an opportunity presented itself to leave the comfortable existence with the federal government and challenge oneself in private enterprise. hallenging and at the same time fun. All the juggling that was learned in managing school and work was put to the test in managing a growing business.
When KPMG decided to sell the practice to an organization where there was a better fit, I went out on my own for six years as a consultant. This was also very challenging but invigorating.
Now, I am involved with an organization that has more bench strength than a single person consultancy can offer clients. I have the opportunity to teach younger people what I have learned about how organizations get things done while at the same time taking care of their risks.
Personally, I have been fortunate to be with a woman who is my soul mate. She has accepted the good and bad that comes with career changes and through it all provided the love, support and friendship. Together, we have two lovely boys who have now grown into men that we are proud of.
When I think back to the period between 1970 and 1975, I remember people much older than I saying it should be treasured. Treasure it now I do and the friends that still share a common start.
