Andrew's Story

I hope to catch up with some old friends (by that, I mean long-standing friends, not necessarily that we're old!!). I am married to Susan Booth Golkow. Susan is originally from Simsbury, CT (where we were married in 1981), and graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art. We have two daughters, Kate (who is 23, who graduated from Virginia Tech this past May, 2008, and is currently in an M.Ed program at George Mason University) and Sherri (who is 19, currently in her second year at the University of Maryland). We live in Fairfax, Virginia, a suburb of Washington DC. I currently practice law with the firm of Rees Broome, PC, in Vienna, Virginia, where my practice is mostly business law. We came down here in 1982 -- the result of an ad in the Inquirer from a government agency that looked unique and different. I was with the Central Intelligence Agency from 1982 to 1987 (Inspector General/Audit Staff then Office of General Counsel -- no, I was never James Bond), and went into private practice with a law firm here in No. Va. in 1987, and I've been doing that ever since. Funny story about that: When I worked for CIA, one weekend, my mom and sister came down to visit. I was giving them the "DC Tour". My mom asked me "Where do you work". I told her "I'm in the Office o...Expand for more
f General Counsel at the Central Intelligence Agency." She replied "Get outa here. You??? You're in the CIA??." I tried to convince her that was where I really worked. She told me that one of our neighbors at Ply-Mar told her that I worked for another government agency. Finally, I told her "Who am I to argue with these people". In any event, I look back fondly on my experience there, but after 5 years, it was time to move on, and I don't regret making the switch to private practice. By necessity, I'm more of a "jock" than I was in high school, if you're willing to stretch that concept somewhat. I enjoy bike-riding, and hit the local bike trails (my record is 40 miles, not exactly Lance Armstrong). I work out 2 to 3 times per week, but I look at it as a "maintenance" activity. We're now transforming to the empty nest situation, and its a new beginning of sorts. Since my wife is from New England, I was introduced to Cape Cod, and really enjoy the place -- we get up there most summers, and for our kids, that is the beach they are most used to (they take cold water much better than I do). For me, there is no such thing as a bad day on the water. If anyone is ever in the DC area, please let me know. If you want to drop me a line, my email is agolkow at reesbroome dot com
