Andrew's Story

Well, since I filled out the questionnaire for the upcoming 30-year reunion, I'll take the lazy way out and just copy/paste it here... Occupation: Software Engineer Hobbies:keeping up with our kids, keeping up with our dogs, music & guitar playing, fitness, cooking, sports spectating (Go Blue!!), software and techie things, DVR'ing every episode of Courage The Cowardly Dog Whenever I hear the song Do you Feel Like We Do? (from Frampton Comes Alive), I think ¿high school!¿ I may not have realized it at the time, but these teacher(s) Mr. Popovich (Calculus), Mr. McGoldrick (Physics), Mr. Heacock (History), and, though I cannot remember her name (oh, the irony), my 12th Grade English teacher especially influenced me. The ¿1979¿ me probably would have been surprised by my present-day interest in waking up at 5 AM most weekday mornings to exercise and/or practice my guitar. The ¿2009¿ me is amazed that I survived without internet access, wifi, Google, and Skype in high school. One thing about me that hasn't changed since graduation is my shoe-size (unfortunately not so true for my waist size) The most fun I had at Churchill was... well, I'm not sure I think back on this incident as having fun, but it was certainly funny at the time and memorable (clearly, it's been 31 years): I recall (with horror and yet, strangely, fondly) the time when Mr. Perlmutter gave himself a pretty significant electric shock while demonstrating an electrolyte lab experiment. After lecturing us (in his typical loud, cranky way) about how ¿ because of the potential electrical hazard - this experiment was too dangerous for us to actually do ourselves (thus, the plan was for him to [safely?] demo it for us and for us just to take notes in our lab notebooks), he mistakenly touched both of the electrodes while they were carrying current/voltage from the wall socket. He was flung back from the lab bench and seemed to be stuck to the wall momentarily with an expression that combined surprise and pain frozen on his face. Then he came out of his temporary shock and just contin...Expand for more
ued demo'ing the experiment as if nothing had happened - not saying a word about his ¿near-death¿ experience. Where has life taken you? Give us a quick Bio: Education/Professional stuff: from Churchill, I went on to college at U of Michigan and got a B.S. degree in chemistry in 1983; from there I went to graduate school at UC Berkeley and got a Ph.D. in computational chemistry in 1987; I've been working in science and games software R&D in a variety of places (San Jose, Dallas, San Diego, and now Charlottesville, VA) since then. Family stuff: I met my wife Mary (also a Ph.D. chemist who now works in the field of drug clinical trials) in 1989 and we got married in 1991; our son Ben was born in 1995 and he just started high school this fall; we adopted our daughter Mia from Korea in 2004, and she's now in first grade. We have four dogs and three cats (I know, that's quite a lot ¿ they just seem to find us) and live in Crozet, VA ¿ a small town about 15 miles west of Charlottesville. Other interesting stuff: I got into competitive running/cycling starting in grad school and continued into my mid-thirties ¿ I did lots of running races and biathlons (I even got my name mentioned in the same sentence as Lance Armstrong in an article in the Dallas Morning News ¿ both of us being Dallas-ites who qualified for the U.S. Biathlon Championships in 1990); these days, my fitness goals are much more modest ¿ if I can get in 3 - relatively tame - morning workouts in a week, I'm happy; also these days, I'm learning to play the guitar ¿ I've been at it for about 1 ½ years (I wish I had started at a younger age, but what are ya gonna do?) and I'm really enjoying it (though the same cannot be said for my wife). I've not done anything irreversibly destructive or foolish, so that's definitely a proud note after 48 years. When you see me at the 30th year reunion, you'll easily recognize me. I'll be the one wearing the name tag that says 'Andy Scheiner' Message to classmates: Stay Cool and have a great summer!!¿ I hope we have some classes together next fall.
