Andy's Story

After 24 years of bachelorhood, I did something I really thought would never happen, I got married again and Cathy is a wonderful lady. I was a CONFIRMED bachelor and said, on many occasions, that I would never be married again. I really expected a great deal of “grief when I told folks I was getting married. My favorite response came from one of my friends I asked to be in the weeding, Marc’s response was, and this is verbatim, “Well Andy, I’m not scared of dying now, cause I know it froze over.” My first wife and I had no children, Cathy has two sons and a daughter. Grace, my oldest granddaughter was 14 months old when Cathy and I started dating, so she had known me “ail” of her life, Grace was nine in July. Emily, my youngest granddaughter was four in May, she was born eight months after Cathy and I were married. Grace and Emily are not “of my blood,” but they are my granddaughters. The girls call me Grandy, I love it. I recently retired from Mosaic Fertilizer. I was a Reliability Engineer at Mosaic’s facility in St. James, Louisiana, about thirty miles downriver from Baton Rouge. My “ex” and I moved to Louisiana in 197...Expand for more
8. I truly enjoyed my job. My vision began to decline and last month, I realized it was time to retire. It “killed my soul,” but it was necessary. I graduated from the University of Arkansas in May 1976 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. As I indicated, I moved to Louisiana in January of 1978. In February of 1992 I went to Saudi Arabia and worked for the Saudi Arabian Oil Company as a Standardization Engineer in the company’s Material Supply Organization. I came home in April of 1997 and have had different engineering positions since that time. In 1989 I joined the Prairieville Fire Department; I joined “to put the wet stuff on the red stuff.” I pursued further situations in the department, I became an EMT, a Haz Mat Technician, I have Rescue II certification, I was the department’s Safety Officer from 2000 to 2002 and from 2004 to 2007, I was one of the department’s captains from 2002 to 2004. My vision began to decline in 2007, I retired from active service with the department in November of 2007. Cathy tells me that I was married to the fire department. I had some of the best days of my life as a member of the Prairieville Fire department.
