Ann's Story

Gosh, how do you summarize 31 years in a few sentences. After graduating HS I started out at UC Irvine in Engineering and then finished my bachelor's at UCLA eventually in geology (on the 7-year plan). I miraculously, and sort of accidentally, got a job at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena doing sequence design work for planetary missions (Voyager, Galileo) -- a sequencer is someone who builds the command sequences that operate the spacecraft, instruments and pointing during the flybys or encounters. After 10 years I moved to upstate NY (Ithaca) to live with and ultimately marry my husband (an astronomer here at Cornell). We were together for 14 years before we finally got married 2 years ago. I was lucky enough to able to keep working in the space business on some fun NASA comet and asteroid missions since being here in New York. I mostly work remotely through a place called the Applied Physics Lab in Maryland. Currently I'm working on a mission to Pluto called New Horizons, and also one to Mercury called MESSENGER. My husband tells people I'm employed at both ends of the solar system. I seem to be taking telecommuting to new limits! :) I have two step kids in their late 20s but none of my own. The past 3 decades were punctuated with some serious bouts o...Expand for more
f illness (very long-term autoimmune stuff). But after long and persistent searching and experimenting it appears that I'm winning the battle and kicking its butt -- I am playing racquetball and other sports again finally and feeling pretty darned good if I eat right and take endless amounts of supplements. The 50's are looking pretty good to me. Anyone reading this with illnesses that could be described as multiple chemical sensitivities, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, multiple food allergies, chronic Epstein Barr, etc, please contact me - I might be able to help you. I've managed to gather many resources in my own search for health. I have proven you don't have to suffer your whole life with this. I hope when I get some time next year to start up a resource website for this kind of illness to help others find answers. The moral of my life's story could be summed up in 3 words: Don't Give Up. Would love to catch up with anyone from those days at Uni High. Take care, Ann P.S. - The picture is of me with my mom at my wedding two years ago. If any of you recall, she was the nurse at Uni High in the 70's. She's 88 now, as feisty as ever, living in Mt. Shasta with my brother John (Uni High '74), his wife Lori and their two kids.
