Ann's Story
After leaving Santa Paula in 1977, I ventured up to San Francisco, going to school and being part of the dance community. I performed with a local modern dance company, worked for two patent lawyers and an arts newspaper called ArtBeat, and made a couple of solo dances. Living in the Haight and in the Mission were wonderful experiences! I went to Mills College, and in 1982, landed my first teaching job out of college in Miami, Florida where I taught modern dance for Dance/Miami and made dances with local dancers. Though my time was brief, staying for just one year in Miami, I met a very good dancer friend who I still perform with and my future husband. A year in Philadelphia and then seven years in NYC. of dating Bruce Kaplan, we decided to get married and then, because he was offered a job in Chattanooga, TN we decided to leave NYC and move south. That was a much bigger move than either one of us expected! Twenty-one years later, we still call Chattanooga home! I founded a performance art space called Barking Legs, and its there that all the magic really happens, run the dance program at Chattanooga State community college, teach Pilates at Pilates in Motion and am still performing. Teaching and dancing consumes every day for me! Bruce and I have a wonderful daughter who is an animator and we spend time on the island of Dominica when we can. I miss Santa Paula but feel that its always with me. I also still have a mother, aunt and brother living in the city! It is with great joy that I get to visit as often as I do!!
