Anna's Story

After Broad Ripple, I attended Butler and received a degree in French. About 14 years ago I started working on an elementary education degree, but changed my mind after I started working with college students. This past year I began working on my Master's in Applied Sociology, with a concentration in Community Leadership and I am now halfway done with my degree. I'm not sure exactly what I want to do with this degree, but I am hopeful that it will help me get a new job when I move to Michigan to be with my fiance. Leaving Indy will be difficult, but I'm looking forward to the adventure of a new city, marriage and life. I have worked in a variety of environments, from city HR to the art museum to my current position at the University of Indianapolis. I have been at UIndy for 13 years now. My current position is in our Academic Success Center where I work primarily with at-risk freshmen, helping them make the transition to college and strengthen their academic skills. My unofficial title is "Mom," as I have been "adopted" by quite a few students over the years! :D In my non-work time I have been actively involved in supporting public ed...Expand for more
ucation, and IPS in particular. I was one of the founding members of the IPS Renewal Team, and I have served on quite a few committees at both the school and district levels. I also sing in a community choir. I was married from 1985 to 1994, and I am the mother of two wonderful daughters who provided me with many opportunities for pride. Unfortunately, both of my girls died in June of 2007. It is difficult to accept that we will be denied the joy of seeing them conquer the world as adults, but I have found some solace in knowing how much they impacted the lives of many, many people in the time that they were with us. The first four years were made easier by the friends of my girls who allowed me to continue to be a part of their lives. (And their parents who allowed me to borrow them on a regular basis!) During the time that Kristen would have been in high school, I was a Band Mom for the Tech Titans Marching Band, part-time taxi mom, and home base for many gatherings. For those of you from Manual, my Dad was Fred Bennett who taught English, Humanities & Drama. I kinda grew up on the Manual stage and on the bus trips to Chicago. :-)
