Annette's Story

I always wanted to be a hair stylist when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were right. I didn't make it through beauty school. It was too messy. Couldn't stand putting my hands on other peoples hair. I decided I liked money better so I applied at First National Bank and began working in the Data processing dept. I loved the work so from 1967 I remained in banking until 2005 when I decided it was time to retire and enjoy myself at a slower pace. I retired as Bank Manager of a branch of a Community bank that I was instrumental in starting up here in Roseburg. It was a wonderful way to end my career. Hank will retire in Nov. 2012 and we plan to travel in the US. We have traveled abroad but not much in the good ole USA so we will load up the motorhome, pack the doggie beds, throw in the golf clubs, and head south to warmer weather in Dec. 2012. Our daughter is a 7th grade teacher at Eagle Point Middle School so if you have grandchildren going there, tell them you knew Mrs. Hohnstein's mom. My blond hair is still blond, still style-less, but hey, it's me! Most won't remember me. I was very shy and quiet. I went steady with Kenny Sherin for a short time. We were both so shy that we held hands but very seldom spoke. On the phone there was a lot of heavy breathing out of fear we might have to speak. I broke up with Kenny when I couldn't eat in front of him in the cafeteria at the grade school. I was getting so skinny my clothes wouldn't fit anymore, Mom was getting worried and made me give him back his ring. Later, he dated the gal that became my sister-in-law. He lived in an apartment across from ...Expand for more
Hank and I and borrowed our bike when he lost his license for DUI. To bad it didn't work for him. He was a good person that died way too young. I didn't do anything outstanding during school. I skipped a few times and went to Medford High to see a guy I liked there. Got caught a time or two and spent time after school in detention. Mom worked for Norton Lumber Co. in Phoenix, not good for me but good for the school when they needed the cartoon for the paper to go to print. Busted, Terri Campbell was advertising editor and we got caught, her Mom forbid her to hang with me, I was a bad influence. I didn't get it, I wasn't a bad person but they sure thought I was. I did my own thing, seldom conformed not that I didn't try, it just wasn't always my thing. Bonnie Sweeney, Lynda Greer and I were the terrible trio. We were pals until graduation. Had a lot of fun together. After graduation, Bonnie left and I lost touch. I got married and lost touch with Lynda but that's what happens, it is what it is. I married Hank in July 1968. We have been married for 43 years. He grew up in Jacksonville, his parents still live there. We stayed in Medford until 1997 when Medco closed. Hank was the Vice President and was almost the last to leave. We then moved to Roseburg and he went to work for Roseburg Lumber as VP of Human Resourses. We love it here. Smaller than Medford, less traffic, better weather, nice Golf course. Miss the good old days in school sometimes, actually, I think I miss my youth not school, but would not give up my family and the experiences I have had, to go back again. I love where I am right this moment and the next and the next and the next........
