Annette's Story

Life After graduating from the University of Michigan with a BS in biomedical science, I added a second major in theater and then pursued a brief acting career. The best thing to come of my theatrical career was meeting my husband, Martin, in a production of Showboat. We moved together to Chicago in 1989. The theater compay we helped establish there, Theater Oobleck, is still going strong and about to celebrate its 20th year. While pursuing my acting career in Chicago, I developed a freelance business in medical writing and editing. Moving to San Francisco in 1992, I continued with freelance science writing and eventually moved into a full-time position at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In 1994, I learned how to build web sites and started what gradually became my current career as a web developer at the Berkeley Lab. In 1995, I took a leave of absence to bicycle from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean on tandem with Martin. We spent more than two months on the byways (some of them freeways) of this country and learned a lot about what makes its people tick. Part of the trip was research for my as-yet-unfinished novel. . We both are honored to do volunteer work with a group called the Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program, which is all about facilitating sports for people with disabilities. Not surprisingly, we help with their cycling program. Returning to work at the lab, I spent some ten years doing combined content development and coding for the Advanced Light Source at Berkeley Lab. (The ALS is a synchrotron light source, a national user facility for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, crystallography, and other fields.) A few years ago I took a new position, still hired through Berkeley Lab but now working for the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute. The facility, created to bring together the genome sequencing efforts from the various national laboratories, was launched to conduct the Human Genome Project, which we were finishing up when I began there. We have since moved on to focus on microbes, particularly those of relevance to new energy technologies, such as biofuels. Today, I work in a team of developers who build web sites for genome data sharing and analysis. Martin and I live and bicycle in Berkeley with our canine daughter, Princess.
