Annette's Story

Fellow Warriors, After I graduated in '76 I attended Cal-Poly, Pomona and received a B.A. in Behavioral Science. My attention was to become a marriage/child/family counselor. My plans changed when in 1981 (the year I graduated), when I married and had my first child. I knew that I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. I was determined to do so. Therefore, during the next few years, I had 2 more children and had a wonderful time bringing them up. They were all extremely bright so my husband and I were challenged to keep them exposed to all kinds of experiences. With one income it was hard, but I am so glad I did not work. Those years were precious. After the kids were older I was itching to go back to school and back to work. I got my teaching credential from Cal-State, San Bernardino and became an elementary teacher for 7 years and became teacher of the year for my site. Then, wanting a bigger challenge, I taught middle school for 2 years (language arts/social studies), became teacher of the year once again both at my site and for the district. Again, I needed something new. (I was also divorced around this time.) So, since 2002, I have been a "Teacher on Special Assignment" working on curriculum, teacher training, and by being a consultant for the Riversid...Expand for more
e County Office of Education. My passions are ELL and GATE students as well as curriculum development because trying to make school fun these days for kids is so hard because of the "standards" they are forced to adhere to. I've given dozens of workshops in my district and across California. So fun! (Yes, I was very shy in high school, but I have since "found my voice." Currently, I am married to the man of my dreams who is a 35 year veteran of education. He's been an administrator, but mostly he has been a counselor which he currently is at a local middle school. He is also a great philanthropist and founder/participant of many charitable organizations. I am taking a leave of absence from work this year for several reasons - all of them medical. I admit it was nice in the beginning. However, I quickly got bored. Hence my participation in "Classmates." But it has turned out to be quite exciting. I will keep reading your stories and looking for old friends. Take good care class of '76! Annette P.S. In case you knew my younger brother, Tony (class of '79), he passed away in 1988 from an accidental overdose of drugs and alcohol. I know he was close to some of you. If you remember anything about him, please share. I would really appreciate it. God bless.
