Anthony's Story

Born and raised in the 10th Ward of Pittsburgh- Lawrencenceville. Lived on Dresden Way and went to St Kierans School 1955-1963. Graduated Central Catholic HS in 1967- and still have many fond memories of the times and people I met while there. Floundered about aimlessly trying to find myself after graduation, somehow manageing to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Robert Morris College in 1974 with a Degree in Business Management. Had hope to attend Law School and started working for the City of Pittsburgh Fire Alarm in 1975 as a Fire Truck Dispatcher- that same year I took the City Police Test along with like 3000 other people. My rank was #24 on the White Male List-this was the first time the test had been given in many years and the results were listed by Court order in four categories- White Male, White Female, Black Male, Black Female. After two more years of anxious waiting- I was finally sworn in as a Pittsburgh Police Officer on 2/14/1977-Valentine's Day- and from that day being a Policeman was the "Love of my Life". That day I started out on the most wonderous journey of my life- that would last 24 years. Not all the times were happy- but these days as a Policeman were the best days of my life- and looking back now they seem so long ago, and they went much too fast. Now in my dreams I am still back on the "Job". I spen...Expand for more
t all 24 years in Uniform- 16 years as a Patrolman in #2/Zone-2 The Hill- 1977-1993. Two years as a Sergeant in Zone-6, Squirrel Hill. And finishing my journey as a Lieutenant at Zone-4 West End 1995-1999 and then back again to Zone-6, 1999-2001. The "Job" has changed since that long ago day in 1977- I can still remember standing in the old #2 Station as a still wet behind the ears rookie- uniform still fresh from the rack- and some "old seasoned veteran" of 20 years saying "Kid, I don't envy you- you have a long way to go and this job is all fouled up !" Only he didn't say "fouled" and I'm thinking "what are you talking about- this is the greatest job in the world ?" Well, I guess all things are relative to the time- I can remember me saying the same thing to some "still wet behind the ears" rookie. But all in all, it's still a great job despite the heads up the butt bosses, the politics and politicians, and the bleeding hearts- but I guess that can be said for any job today. Today, I quietly enjoy my retirement at home in Troy Hill with my buddies- my dogs- gardening,E-baying, watching TV, working on my hobbies- staying up all night and doing basically what I want to do, when I want to do it. Never really thought about getting a part time job or starting a new career-heck if I wanted to work- I would have never retired.
